ABOUT ADN

The Australian Democracy Network (ADN) is working for a healthy Australian democracy that puts people and the planet first. We bring people and organisations together to share resources and strategies so that we can have a greater impact on the issues that affect us all. We convene a diverse group of social change makers who focus on a wide range of issues – but we all know we need a healthy democracy to win the progress we seek, and we know we need to work together to be powerful enough to change the system.

We face enormous challenges: the climate and extinction crises, an inequitable economy that traps people in cycles of poverty and disadvantage, struggling health and education systems, and justice for First Nations people and refugees.

The big decisions which shape our future on all these issues are negotiated through our democratic process. If that process is broken, we will all get bad outcomes. To make progress, we need a healthy democracy capable of delivering the change we seek. A healthy democracy is a precondition to creating the future we want.

Our work focuses on the key objectives of promoting and protecting a robust civil society, including the right to advocate and protest. We campaign for reforms which make our political system more fair and representative, including to reduce the undue influence of big corporate money on our political system, so that public power is always exercised for the public good.

WHAT’S THE ROLE?

You will work closely with the Campaigns Team, and play a key role in telling the stories of people impacted by democratic dysfunction and explaining solutions in ways people can relate to. You will help us cut through with campaign messages, get our stories in the right outlets, support our partners to be effective spokespeople, and ensure all our communications are impactful, strategic and compelling. A strong traditional and social media presence are essential to building the public support and momentum we need to win ambitious reforms.

ABOUT YOU

You are an experienced media professional with a talent for telling important stories that help set the agenda, move hearts and minds, and change the national story. You’re a team player who can work with our campaigners to develop communications strategies to further our social change goals. You’re strategic, combining a strong reactive skill set with a forward-thinking vision for our media and communications work. You’re flexible and creative and will thrive on the challenges and opportunities of working in a small dynamic organisation. You’ll enjoy coaching our team and supporting our lived experience communities and partners, getting a range of unusual voices heard in national debates.

WHY WORK FOR US?

You will join a small, growing and committed team doing groundbreaking work in tackling the problems holding back Australian democracy and helping create the solutions to these problems.

ADN is proud to offer our staff a supportive workplace with excellent conditions, including:

  • Genuine flexibility in working hours and location
  • Four weeks of annual leave a year plus an additional three days off over the Christmas / New Year period
  • Thirty days of personal leave a year (pro-rata) available to use immediately upon commencement
  • Superannuation contribution of 11%
  • Access to Long Service Leave after five years of continuous service
  • Eighteen weeks paid parental leave for parents (regardless of who is the birth parent) after 12 months of service
  • Ongoing professional development opportunities tailored to your individual career goals
  • Regular team and whole organisation get togethers so we can plan, learn and grow together
  • Access to wellbeing support

ADN is committed to providing an environment of mutual respect where equal employment opportunities are available to all applicants. We actively encourage First Nations people, people from CALD backgrounds, LGBTIQA+ people, people with disability and others who have diverse experiences of our world to apply for this opportunity.
