About the opportunity

NSW Health Pathology are seeking dedicated Medical Laboratory Technicians for the Haematology Laboratory at the John Hunter Hospital. The John Hunter Hospital laboratory serves a wide community with specialties including trauma, obstetrics, cardiology, transplant, haematology and oncology for all ages. You will be part of a dynamic team with a positive culture who use the RITE values to serve our community.

What you'll be doing
Perform a range of laboratory investigations and tests (manual and automated) and technical tasks by applying established methods and procedures within the Haematology Laboratory, including Coagulation, Morphology and Blood Transfusion, as directed. Undertake other laboratory duties within the Haematology Laboratory including preparation of materials and the maintenance of equipment in line with established laboratory processes, procedures and protocols.

Apply now by addressing the following questions: * Minimum qualification of Diploma in Laboratory Technology or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution with subjects relevant to pathology or medical laboratory operations
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the delivery of pathology services within the Haematology Laboratory, including use of Laboratory Information Systems, Patient Systems and Quality Systems
  • Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner and to manage competing priorities to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment whilst working autonomously to deliver results within specified timeframes set to meet client expectations
  • Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers and patients as well as clinical laboratory staff
  • Display initiative, problem solving and analytical skills including an ability to apply established principles in a Haematology laboratory and investigate and resolve general and complex issues within the laboratory environment
  • Commitment to the principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement and to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities

Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases

This is a Category A position. All Category A applicants must read and understand NSW Health Policy Directive Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Diseases. All recruits must agree to comply with the requirements outlined in this policy. All recruits must provide evidence against specified diseases and comply with the requirements of this policy at their own cost prior to appointment.

All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course of a COVID-19 vaccine which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA). Additionally, Category A workers are required to receive a booster dose three months after completing the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations. New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate (IM011 immunisation medical exemption form) certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW.

Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.
