About the Opportunity  An energetic, enthusiastic and experienced Medical Laboratory Technician is required for the Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology Laboratory Services (CIDMLS). This position is temporary full time until the 13th September 2024 and based at Westmead Hospital campus.

The position is located in the ICPMR, Westmead, situated within the Westmead Hospital Campus, which is currently under redevelopment to transform the precinct into a new innovative, contemporary and integrated centre of health, research and education. We operate more than 60 laboratories and around 200 collection centres across NSW and conduct over 60 million tests per annum. Our network of pathologists are supported by scientists, technicians and support staff who quickly and accurately assess samples so clinical teams can make the best possible treatment decisions for patients. Our Forensic & Analytical Science Service provides independent, objective analysis to the NSW criminal and coronial justice systems.

What you'll be doing
Perform a range of laboratory investigations and tests (manual and automated) and technical tasks by applying established methods and procedures, as directed. This may include nucleic acid extraction methods, commercial and in-house IVD molecular biology assays (real-time PCR, RT- PCR and conventional gel based PCR techniques) and conventional microbiology methods such as culture and microscopy. Undertake other laboratory duties including preparation of materials, housekeeping and the maintenance of equipment in line with established laboratory processes, procedures and protocols.

The incumbent will work in a team and may rotate through various laboratories within the microbiology department.

  1. Minimum qualification of Diploma in Laboratory Technology or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution with subjects relevant to pathology or medical laboratory operations
  2. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the delivery of pathology services within a microbiology laboratory, including use of Laboratory Information Systems, Patient Systems and Quality Systems
  3. Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner and to manage competing priorities to meet deadlines
  4. Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment whilst working autonomously to deliver results within specified timeframes set to meet client expectations
  5. Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers and patients as well as clinical laboratory staff
  6. Display initiative, problem solving and analytical skills including an ability to apply established principles in a pathology laboratory and investigate and resolve general and complex issues within the laboratory environment
  7. Commitment to the principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement and to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities
  8. Demonstrated experience in a diagnostic pathology laboratory using molecular biology methods such as automated and manual nucleic acid extraction as well as conventional and real time PCR for the detection of microorganisms.

Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases
This is a Category A position. All Category A applicants must read and understand NSW Health Policy Directive PD2022_030 Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Diseases. All recruits must agree to comply with the requirements outlined in this policy. All recruits must provide evidence against specified diseases and comply with the requirements of this policy at their own cost prior to appointment.

All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course of a COVID-19 vaccine which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA). Additionally, Category A workers are required to receive a booster dose three months after completing the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations. New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate (IM011 immunisation medical exemption form) certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW.


Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.
