Job description

The Role

As a Mission lead, you will be laser focused on delivering specific innovative, asymmetric, high-priority capabilities for the ADF.

You will:

  • Lead a small, semi-autonomous cross functional team practicing inclusive leadership and collaboration.
  • Deliver outcomes at speed utilising innovative approaches while meeting legislative requirements.
  • Bring together stakeholders with different perspectives and skill sets to work collaboratively on an outcome.
  • Using the initial problem statement, lead a co-design process with industry to develop a solution that can be rapidly introduced into capability.
  • Work closely with Defence Capability Managers, industry partners, research organisations and the broader Department of Defence to manage risk, provide timely performance reports and ultimately solve the capability challenge.

The ASCA Mission Leader will report to the Assistant Secretary ASCA Delivery and be responsible for the delivery of one of the ASCA Missions.

About our Team

In response to strategically directed Defence priorities, ASCA harnesses the potential of industry, research organisations, and Government partners. It will also help align and transform the US, UK, and Australian defence industrial bases by accelerating discrete projects under AUKUS Pillar II (Advanced Capabilities). The Missions will each address a specific capability challenge, be time-limited (up to 3 years) and have clear performance targets. Mission leaders will be engaged for the duration of that specific activity.

Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate will have a strong history of establishing and working effectively in teams, and a record of leadership which encourages new ideas, builds trust and provides support for the development of emerging skills.

As an ASCA Mission lead you will:

  • Apply technical qualifications or experience in relation to one of the following two Problem Statements:
  • How might we penetrate and degrade advanced integrated air defence systems so that Defence can conduct effective long-range strike operations, taking into account speed and scale required to operate in congested and contested environments that is faster than a potential adversary’s ability to react?
  • How might we improve the processing and synthesis of large amounts of intelligence data to support the planning and apportionment of platforms, taking into account different classification levels of data, systems and allies data systems?
  • Demonstrate strong judgement and capitalise on innovative alternatives to resolve complex problems;
  • Effectively and constructively challenge the status quo as required;
  • Demonstrate resilience and personal accountability for the quality of advice and delivery of results through engaging, collaborating and partnering; and
  • Demonstrate exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.

Application Closing Date: Sunday 11 February 2024.
