Job description

  • Leadership role in the ethical fashion movement supporting workers' rights
  • Would suit candidates with operations, advocacy, and management experience
  • Melbourne, Fitzroy, office-based (1 day WFH weekly), permanent full-time

The Organisation

Ethical Clothing Australia (ECA) is a collaboration between industry and the trade union movement which protects and upholds the rights of Australian garment workers. ECA is working towards a transparent and ethical Australian textile clothing and footwear (TCF) industry that encourages manufacturers to participate in a voluntary accreditation and labelling system.

To be accredited, manufacturing operations are audited, including outsourced locations in Australia, to ensure workers and homeworkers throughout the supply chain are being paid appropriately, receiving legal entitlements and conditions.

The Role

Leading a small team and reporting to the Committee, you will oversee the development and implementation of strategies, provide support to Committee to secure partnerships with government and other relevant bodies, and build and strengthen relations with various stakeholders whilst preparing submissions and reports.

You will also oversee the administration, promotion, and industry participation in both the accreditation process, and the labelling system to identify and support ethically made Australian TCF products. You will encourage consumers and procurers to support accredited businesses.

Other responsibilities will include:

  • Managing the agendas and reports for Committee meetings and AGMs
  • Financial and governance policies and procedures and budget management
  • Manage the contractual and reporting arrangements of all funding agreements
  • Assisting the accreditation advisors with growing the number of accredited businesses
  • Oversee office management and staffing requirements

Skills Required

You have developed your people management and operational experience in advocacy and policy-driven cultures such as the Union movement, NGOs, or government sectors. Ideally, you have an in-depth understanding of working on socio-economic issues and a commitment to the values and objectives of ECA.

Your strategic mindset and excellent communication skills will enable you to lobby high-level decision makers and expertly manage and influence a diverse range of stakeholders. Additional skills you will offer include:

  • Collaborative team leadership and organisational management
  • Networking skills including government sector engagement
  • Campaign promotion experience and a commitment to worker’s rights
  • Experience in developing policy positions and writing submissions
  • Planning skills to identify and evaluate effective advocacy tactics
  • Track record of public speaking and presenting and liaising with the media

If you want to use your advocacy and organisational management experience to improve policy decisions and social outcomes for marginalised workers, apply now by submitting your resume and cover letter responding to the skills required above and why you are the best fit for the role. Alternatively, contact Lois Freeke on 03 8080 8978 to discuss your interest.

Please note there is no formal closing date for this role, if you are interested we would encourage you to apply as soon as possible.
