Network Security Specialist

The Network Security Specialist - will support the delivery of the University’s Cyber Security Transformation Program (the Program), a multi-year initiative designed to materially reduce the University’s exposure to cyber security risk through the implementation of technology and business changes.

The primary focus for this role is to act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the uplift of network security controls that is within the scope of the Program at the University. The Network Security Specialist must proven expert level network (router, switch) & network security (experience be able to understand technical elements of the platforms being configured, and guide and instruct teams performing the integration. They must be willing and capable to learn and work on multiple challenges at the same time

Specific accountabilities for this role include:

• SME for configuring, deploying, and integrating device management solutions, including experience and understanding in device onboarding, security baselines, compliance and configuration policies.
• SME for configuring, deploying, and integrating endpoint protection solutions, including experience and understanding in antivirus, encryption, host-based firewalls, attack surface reduction, EDR etc.
• Manage product enhancement and/or feature requests with vendor/s as needed. Assist with designing and documenting work processes within the respective cyber security project and transitioning of services into BAU. Create documentation as required for internal and external purposes.
• Investigation of operational requirements, problems, and opportunities, seeking effective business solutions through improvements in automated and/or process change.
• Support procurement, design, development, implementation, testing and acceptance activities to ensure successful delivery of cyber security solutions in scope of program.
• Developing, maintaining, and managing relationships and communications with senior stakeholders, meeting challenges with confidence, and dealing with frequently conflicting and/or competing objectives and drivers of stakeholders.

Skills

• Minimum 5 years of experience in network design or operations
• Relevant certifications such as Fortinet Network Security Expert, Cisco Security certifications, Palo Alto Certified Network Security Engineer would be highly desirable
• Understanding of network security architectures, topologies, and security services and protocols (e.g. routing, switching, proxy, IPS, firewalls, load balancers, WAF, VPNs, NTP, DNS etc.)
• Has developed a plan and successfully implemented firewall rule hardening and consolidation across large enterprise network with the aim achieving zero business impact
• Has developed and successfully implemented network infrastructure hardening controls across similar sized organisations
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to handle high demand situations with management and key stakeholders.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, ensuring that the underlying problem is understood, and a robust approach / solution is developed.
