Job description

Our client is looking for an experienced scientist to take on the role of Laboratory Manager in our new, purpose-built commercial luminescence dating facility. We are seeking a highly motivated and talented luminescence scientist to help us build and grow our new business based in Brisbane servicing Australia and beyond. This individual will be responsible for maintaining the daily laboratory operations, managing, and training staff members, performing fee-for-service analyses and contributing to method development. There will also be opportunities for community outreach and occasional field research campaigns. Our client is particularly focused on novel applications of luminescence dating, including rock surface dating techniques.

Our client’s brand-new commercial laboratory is fully equipped for the preparation and analysis of sediment, archaeological and rock samples under subdued lighting conditions including multiple fume hoods with HF capabilities, a rock drill, a low speed high-precision rock wire rock cutter and a UVACube solar simulator. A separate reader room houses five RisØ automated TL/OSL readers all with single grain attachments, along with further room for growth as the business develops.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Overseeing day-to-day management of the laboratory including organization, record keeping and delegation of laboratory work to staff.
  • Management of staff, including training and development.
  • Developing and overseeing efficient workflows to ensure high sample throughput. 
  • Perform fee-for-service work on samples sent from external parties including sample preparation, luminescence measurements, analysis and report writing.
  • Develop and refine novel applications of luminescence dating methods such as rock surface dating.
  • Develop and refine standard operating procedures (SOPs). 
  • Troubleshoot components of the RisØ luminescence readers via communication with the RisØ technical staff.
  • Ensure compliance with all guidelines and regulatory standards including chemical and radiation safety.
  • Maintaining appropriate laboratory supply levels and consumables.
  • Occasional involvement in community outreach and fieldwork campaigns. 
  • Lead a safety culture in the laboratory (both physical and psychological), actively promoting safe work practices.
  • Manage compliance, quality management and continuous improvement of the laboratory.

Requirements/About the Candidate:

  • Ideally a Doctoral degree in luminescence science, archaeology, geology or a related field or Master’s degree in equivalent fields.
  • Minimum two years of senior experience in luminescence laboratory operations including sample collection, preparation and the analysis of results.
  • Specific experience operating RisØ luminescence readers.
  • Must have excellent communication and demonstrated leadership skills.
  • A strong understanding of laboratory safety protocols, regulations and standards.
  • Familiarity with the management of chemical inventories.
  • Ability to engage and influence stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to manage complex workflows to ensure successful delivery of luminescence dating results at a large scale.
  • Must have full Australian work rights. 
  • This is a Lab-based position located in Brisbane and cannot be remotely located.
  • Desired knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting/maintenance procedures of RisØ luminescence readers in liaison with RisØ. 
  • Personnel interest in novel applications of luminescence dating techniques including rock surface dating.
  • Solid interpersonal skills and willingness to train and mentor new staff members.
  • Experience in programming languages including R.
