The NSW Department of Education provides, funds and regulates education services for NSW students from early childhood to secondary school, delivering world-class education through its public schools and providing funding support to non-government schools.

We employ, develop and support teachers, leaders and other staff to deliver the best outcomes for students and to advance the wellbeing of Aboriginal people.

About the Role

Aboriginal Education Officers provide assistance to teachers, Aboriginal students and their families to support improved learning, welfare and well-being outcomes for Aboriginal students.

Essential Requirements

  • Working with Children Check Clearance
  • First Aid Certificate or willingness to undertake First Aid training
  • Administration of Medications – training to be provided based on student needs.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the Department’s Aboriginal Education and Training policies.

Selection Criteria

  1. Understanding of the needs of Aboriginal students.
  2. Effective oral and written communication skills.
  3. Knowledge of Aboriginal communities and cultures.
  4. Ability to interact with Aboriginal students and parents.
  5. Experience working as part of a team.
  6. Knowledge of the local Aboriginal community.

Additional School Information (Optional)

Niland School is a regional facility that provides educational programs for students with an emotional disturbance as well as a mild or moderate intellectual disability. The current enrolment is 42 students, with 31% identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island heritage.

Niland School caters for students from year 5 to year 12, with 6 classes and up to 7 students per class. Each class is staffed by a Teacher with training and/or experience in a special education setting and a School Learning Support Officer (SLSO).

The school aims to develop lifelong learning skills through a collaborative process involving the student, their parents or caregivers, school staff and personnel from relevant support agencies.

The Niland School curriculum focuses on developing the whole person through individualised learning plans with improvement goals that encompass academic, vocational, physical, creative and social skills. A critical focus in teaching and learning programs delivered is that of transition to work and the development of strategies to provide students with a foundation to become productive members of the wider community.
