About the role

The Burdekin Plant Breeder is a new role that takes operational leadership of the Brandon based selection program. The position has responsibility for six staff plus casual workforce and an annual budget of $1.4m. The program evaluates new germplasm from the seedling stage through to assessment of commercial potential and conducts clean seed production for wholesale distribution. Achievement of these objectives requires leadership of significant technical operations and staff management. The position plays a key role in SRA’s industry relationships in the Burdekin including leading collaborative breeding with Wilmar Sugar Australia and oversight of variety distribution to growers through Burdekin Productivity Services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate as an effective leader to deliver on SRA’s safety, strategic and financial objectives whilst building strong alignment, across SRA and within the business unit
  • Participate as an effective member of the Variety Development team to refine and deliver on SRA’s strategic and financial objectives whilst building a strong safety culture, employee engagement, team ownership and accountability, across SRA and within the business unit
  • Actively lead and engage staff in a safe work culture by regular and open discussions, safe work actions, continuous improvement of HSE protocols and practices with active engagement in established procedures
  • Contribute to selection of parents for crossing, F1 hybrids for field evaluation, and selection and promotion decisions for the Burdekin program with the guidance of the Variety Development Manager
  • Lead the planning and execution of the field trial program, propagations, quality testing, and sampling for offsite testing including disease nurseries and fibre quality
  • Manage the production and dissemination of performance information of new varieties taking a leadership role in product marketing through key relationships with the Regional Variety Committee and Burdekin Productivity Services Ltd
  • Create, build and maintain trusted and engaging relationships with growers, advisors and millers on new & existing varieties at the regional level
  • Responsible for workforce planning and execution of regional technical, operational and engagement activities
  • Lead the integrated breeding program between SRA and Wilmar
  • Other duties as required
About you
You will bring with you the following qualifications, capabilities and experience:
  • Experience in applied plant breeding, preferably sugarcane
  • Demonstrated record of using diverse scientific disciplines in plant breeding
  • Scientific expertise in at least one discipline relevant to plant breeding
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex logistics in a research environment
  • Experience in building strong and trusted industry relationships
  • Evidence of a strong and effective professional network in crop improvement
  • Strong collaborator across the organisation and external partners
  • Outstanding stakeholder relationship skills – growers, peers, staff, industry, and Board
  • A current driver’s licence is required to drive SRA vehicles
  • Degree in Science, Agricultural Science or equivalent
  • PhD in Quantitative Genetics, Molecular Genetics, Plant Breeding, Plant Pathology, Phenotyping or allied field, or equivalent professional experience
