Te āhuatunga a te tūranga - About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Advisor to join our Judicial Resources team within Te Kura Kaiwhakawā (Te Kura). Te Kura provides ongoing education and legal resources to support the judiciary of Aotearoa New Zealand.

As the Principal Advisor, you will undertake legal research and produce resources to support judicial officers. You will lead the development of new content, working with key stakeholders including judges and external experts. We are looking for someone with subject-matter expertise in criminal law and the law of evidence, and who has the ability to produce high quality legal content for Te Kura's Criminal Jury Trials Bench Book, Sexual Violence Trials Bench Book, and Family Violence Bench Book.

The Principal Advisor will work closely with the Manager, Judicial Resources to support capability across the team, provide strategic advice and support, and lead programmes of work. You will provide leadership and supervision to Te Kura's research staff, reviewing and providing feedback on content before it is published to ensure it is legally correct, well-written and relevant to the needs of the specific audience.

He pūkenga tou - Skills and experience

To be successful in the position you will:
  • have a tertiary qualification in law, preferably at post-graduate level, coupled with at least eight to ten years' post-graduation experience in practice, legal policy, law reform, and/or academia
  • have admission in New Zealand as a barrister and solicitor or eligibility to be admitted
  • have exceptional written skills and the ability to meet the given audiences' needs, with a proven track record of completing and publishing legal research
  • be a proven communicator and be able to build trusted relationships across a wide range of audiences
  • have a working knowledge of the judiciary and machinery of government
  • have experience mentoring and developing junior staff and peers
  • have strong project management and problem-solving skills, and an ability to work with multiple stakeholders
  • bring an understanding of te ao Māori, te reo and tikanga and a personal commitment to continuing to develop knowledge of, and in, these three areas
  • show initiative, resilience, and a commitment to working collaboratively in a small team.

Te Kura Kaiwhakawā is the education and development arm of Aotearoa New Zealand's judiciary. We develop and deliver events, programmes and resources that support judges and judicial officers at all stages of their careers.

Te Kura is a business unit of Te Tari Toko i te Tumu Whakawā - the Office of the Chief Justice (Te Tari) that supports the Chief Justice, President of the Court of Appeal and Chief Judge of the High Court in their leadership and administrative responsibilities. Te Tari is a business unit of Te Tahu o te Ture - the Ministry of Justice.

The role is Wellington based, but we are happy to consider flexible working arrangements.

Salary range

The appointing salary for this position will be between $100,221 and $130,876 based on skills and experience.
