About North East Link
North East Link is the biggest ever investment in Melbourne's north-east – changing the way people move around Melbourne.
Victoria's longest road tunnels will fix the missing link in our city's freeway network, take 15,000 trucks off local roads a day and slash travel times by up to 35 minutes. We'll also complete the Ring Road in Greensborough, overhaul the Eastern Freeway, build Melbourne's first dedicated busway and the North East Trail – more than 34km of walking and cycling paths.
About the Opportunity
Reporting directly to the Director, Legal, as our next Principal Lawyer, you will be inspired to provide high quality and pragmatic legal advice across multiple areas and stages of the North East Link mega project, leading key aspects of project development and delivery, including matters relating to procurement, contracting, interfaces, public law and policy. You and your colleagues will work in complete partnership with our multi-disciplinary project teams to manage legal, commercial and contractual risks that are prevalent for a project of this size. This role will appeal to any astute, legal professional who is seeking the opportunity to deliver significant value to a city-shaping program of works.
On a day-to-day basis, this role could see you drafting contractual and transaction-related documentation, providing best-for-project advice, briefing government stakeholders, participating in knowledge-sharing activities across all Major Transport Infrastructure Authority projects, negotiating with potential suppliers and so much more! You will also have opportunities for autonomy and people management, and exposure to senior decision-makers, whilst being supported by a dedicated, passionate team.
This position is based at 121 Exhibition Street, Melbourne. Attendance at 180 Lonsdale Street will also be required for this position. Hybrid working options are available. NELP welcomes individuals seeking flexible working arrangements (such as job share or part-time working hours) to apply for this position.
About You
You will be a key liaison and expert communicator throughout the organisation, thus requiring self-awareness, a sense of purpose and critical thinking abilities in addition to exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills and the ability to within a political and complex working environment.

In addition, you are:
  • A construction, projects or infrastructure specialist, ideally with experience in front-end procurement and contracting or delivery experience across alliance, D&C, PPP or collaborative contract models
  • Well-versed in managing project interfaces, contractual matters (including drafting or claims), probity and process requirements and matters of public law
  • Forward thinking – you have a sound awareness of current and emerging best practice approaches across legal, procurement and risk management fields
  • Admitted, or eligible to be admitted, as a legal practitioner to the Supreme Court of Victoria or a similar jurisdiction within Australia.
