Job description

Working within Animal Biosecurity and Welfare and operating from the Tick Fever Centre, at Wacol you will be involved in a team-based role where you will manage and oversee the Diagnostic, Quality Control and Vaccine Production Laboratories.

You will also ensure operational activities for the Tick Fever Centre are performed and meet Australian Pesticides Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA)/ Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements and to ensure (National Association of Testing Authorities) NATA requirements are met.

Key tasks and responsibilities of the role (your contribution)

  • Support scientific diagnostic services by providing high-level technical specialist services and advice to work unit, business area and external stakeholders. Where relevant this may include providing timely, high level, expert and authoritative advice on policy and legislative issues and suggesting solutions to complex problems based on rigorous analysis of relevant information This will include:
- Guiding individuals within the Diagnostic team to meet deliverables, schedules and key performance indicators within TFC Activity Plan
- Ensure National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) guidelines adhered to
  • Manage and guide project team members to ensure that scientific tasks undertaken to achieve project outcomes are in accordance with relevant standard operating procedures (SOPs), protocols or methodologies to achieve the generation of valid data and ongoing compliance with relevant quality standards, proficiency testing programs, laboratory accreditations, workplace health and safety requirements and legislative obligations. This includes demonstrating a high level of initiative and ability to work with limited guidance whilst individually undertaking highly specialised/complex tasks or taking on leadership responsibility involving direct supervision of project team members undertaking routine or moderately complex tasks.
This will include:
- Procedures to comply with code of GMP and Australian standards
- Oversee the Quality Management System
- Guiding the QA team leader to meet deliverables, schedules and key performance indicators within TFC Activity Plan
- Manage and oversee permits/Workplace Health & Safety (WHS) in laboratories, Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) and Approved Arrangement (AA) audits
  • Manage own and, where relevant, teamwork priorities to ensure assigned scientific technical tasks are undertaken efficiently and effectively to achieve project/team aims and deliverables, including planning and managing work across the team, allocating work, monitoring outputs, providing detailed project reports to senior scientists and exercising sound judgement to proactively identify issues and appropriate solutions to technical issues. This will include:
- Manage allocation of resources across the laboratory teams to meet deliverables, schedules and performance indicators within TFC Activity Plan.
- Guide team leaders to identify solutions for resources, ensure operational priorities are met
  • Lead a team or contribute respected and recognised expertise in a field of technical speciality, demonstrating flexibility to manage changing priorities. This will include:
- Clear vision of team overall goals, addressing under performance, lead by example
  • Significantly contribute to ongoing improvement, validation and currency of scientific practices within work unit and wider business area by contributing to validation and implementation of specialised scientific tests/methods for diagnosing/identifying new or emerging biosecurity threats and diseases, monitoring compliance with quality system objectives and directly contributing to identification and implementation of associated business system improvements. This will include:
- Continuous improvement and drive innovations
