The VGSO

The branch and role
The Commercial, Property & Technology Branch advises government clients in relation to a wide range of commercial transactions with the private sector and other government agencies. Many of these arrangements involve substantial financial commitments by government, and the provision of significant infrastructure or services to clients.
Due to internal movement and strong client demand, we have an exciting opportunities for a Principal Solicitor with a commercial and IP/IT background or interest to join the team. We are looking for a lawyer to make a strong and meaningful contribution to Commercial, Property & Technology Branch. This role will provide high level legal advice and representation for government bodies on various issues, but primarily in relation to Commercial, Information Technology and Intellectual Property law. In addition, this position will assist the Managing Principal Solicitor in client relationship management, marketing activities and growing the practice.
Specifically, this role will appeal to you if wish to engage in complex legal and commercial problem solving on important IT projects. The nature of the State's responsibilities mean you will work on projects with a broad mix of new and emerging technologies, including cryptocurrencies, data security, major procurements and a wide range of other matters.
Responsibilities

  • Provide commercial legal advice to government clients on IT projects and contracts, intellectual property, privacy, competition and consumer law.
  • Draft, negotiate and settle a range of complex IT and IP agreements, as well as other documents relating to privacy and data sharing by the Victorian government.
  • Undertake research and analysis on complex and challenging matters.
Skills and experience

  • Sound knowledge and understanding of the principles and practice of commercial law in the context of IT, IP and privacy matters.
  • An understanding of IT procurement / structuring will be highly regarded but not essential.
  • Proven ability to efficiently provide expert and authoritative written and oral advice on complex and sensitive matters.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team and produce work within tight timeframes.
  • Experience in business development and client relationship management, with the ability to develop positive and effective relationships in order to support the branch and its practice areas.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform complex analysis, provide professional leadership, supervision and mentoring to staff.
