The role

As part of our Maritime group’s Product Engineering team, the Product Design Team Leads provide leadership and activity management of a team of Systems Engineers, centred on the Saab Combat Management System (CMS) solution and its requirements, design and formal acceptance.

The role also includes a significant component of stakeholder coordination, with other disciplines including: Project Engineering; CMS Software / Integration teams; CMS Hardware teams; and, speciality engineering (Safety, Security and ILS).

Further, the successful candidate will undertake the following according to agreed requirements, cost and schedule:

  • Agree team scope, schedule, design, implementation, and acceptance with the Product Engineering Manager
  • Report progress against agreed scope and allocate and manage work within the team
  • Provide technical leadership and supervision to direct reports. Including review of engineering artefacts produced by the team
  • Coordination with Project Engineering to clearly define CMS scope, resolve issues / risks and ensure alignment of Project expectations with product development
  • Coordination with other engineering disciplines/teams, including CMS software, CMS hardware, logistics, safety and security, ensuring requirements and design are well understood and checking progress/alignment of technical solutions via regular meetings and artefact reviews
  • Lead the development of system tests and analysis to verify system requirements
  • Conduct and/or participate in mandatory design reviews (e.g. SRR, PDR, CDR) and working groups / demonstrations with internal and external stakeholders

Flexible work arrangements such as hybrid work from home / office, 9 day fortnight and part time (0.8 FTE minimum) will be considered for this role.

Please note, we are open to these roles being based out either our Adelaide or Melbourne locations.

About you

Your skills and experience will include:

  • Tertiary qualifications in engineering or related technical discipline
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience in applying system engineering processes, standards, methodologies and approaches to develop SE outputs over several parts of the SE lifecycle, in a relevant industry (e.g. industrial, automotive, aerospace, software, mechatronics).
  • Demonstrated ability to work with multi-discipline teams and build relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience in producing and reviewing technical documentation
  • Experience in leadership of engineering teams
  • Experience or an understanding of engineering in a Defence Regulatory environment, or equivalent
  • Well-developed communication skills (both written and oral)


As Defence security clearance is required for this role, applicants must be Australian citizens and eligible to obtain and maintain an NV1 clearance.
