SUMMARY:
A background in Aluminium smelter project delivery, supervises the engineering activity (all disciplines) on a project (or study), or designated portions of a project (or study), for the Aluminium & Alumina Centre of excellence (AACE). Supports the planning and direction of engineering assignments on the project (or study). Has technical responsibilities for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating these assignments.

JOB DIMENSIONS:
A. Supervision Received- Receives operational supervision from a Project/Study Manager and/or Manager of AACE.
- Receives administrative and technical supervision from an Engineering Manager, Manager of Engineering or a senior Project Engineer. Assignments given in terms of specific objectives and limits.
- Coordinates day to day job duties and requirements with customer point of contact.
- Limited supervisory responsibility over the engineers (Ma’aden and Contractors) of all disciplines assigned to the project/study or portion of the project/study as directed by the Project/Study Manager and/or Manager of AACE.
- As the point of Bechtel-Client contact on engineering aspects of assigned project or portions of a project/study, maintains regular client contact for progress of work, exchange of information, advice.
- Represents Engineering in respect of assigned items with suppliers and project personnel in jobsite conferences.
- Maintains contact with client representatives, suppliers, regulatory authorities, consultants, and Bechtel personnel as required to obtain and exchange information pertinent to assignments.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
- Coordinates engineering activities for the project/study or assigned portion.
- Assists in establishing the detailed project execution plan and the development of the overall project engineering budget and schedule. Inputs to the engineering elements of a project capital estimate (proposals and execution) quantities and budgets.
- Performs and manages the work in accordance with relevant Ma’aden Engineering Department Procedures, design guides and Stage Gate Manual.
- Supports the design and procurement schedules for approval.
- Assists in the preparation, approval or recommended approval of project procedures for engineering, as required.
- Coordinates engineering effort with Project/Study Manager, Procurement, Construction, Startup, Environmental Safety and Health (ES&H) and Project Controls when assigned.
- When assigned directs engineering activities in preparation of project proposals, including estimates for engineering staffing, quantities, scope reviews, schedules and coordination with Business Development and other functional groups.
- Reviews and approves design documents, change orders, material requisitions and specifications for construction or procurement use.
- Supervises the preparation of, reviews and endorses bid analyses and recommendations for procurement of equipment material and services within Engineering’s scope of responsibility as assigned.
- Resolves field-initiated questions on engineering.
- Visits jobsite as required for exchange of information.
- Initiates Bechtel/Client correspondence related to the engineering portion of the contract.
- Reviews project engineering progress against approved schedules, evaluates changes and takes corrective action when required.
- Supports the flow of information required from third parties to assure the timely progress of the engineering work.
- Prepares or directs the preparation of project studies, reports, forecasts, special engineering reports and plant data book as assigned.
- Ensures that Technical Risk Assessments are comprehensive and complete, safety practices and procedures are implemented, and engineering design and corresponding design documentation are in compliance with project Quality Assurance plan and procedures as assigned.
- Communicates technical issues and recommends solutions to client, project/study and functional management as directed and as appropriate.
- Champions the creation of a project work environment, supported by leadership on the project/program, which fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.
- Supports, as requested, in the proposal development and preliminary design phases and presents these to client management.
- Establishes relationships with professional colleagues and outside consultants retained by Bechtel.
JOB KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
Knowledge and experience in project and study delivery in the Aluminium industry, specifically, an understanding of the project stage gates and associated deliverables.
Technical knowledge of related engineering systems, engineering calculations, applications of engineering and construction methods and materials, and engineering application of computers.
Knowledge of project engineering processes and procedures.
Knowledge of related construction practices and the economics involved and current knowledge of new methods of design and construction.
Knowledge of industry/regulatory codes and standards and design criteria pertinent to the particular discipline.
Skill in oral and written communication.
An open communication style that demonstrates a positive manner, confidence and with a focus on client requirements. This would include being comfortable coordinating with client representatives to obtain their approval on phases of work and supporting their review/response of deliverables in a timely manner.
Effective problem-solving skills, with a strong analytical and critical thinking skills to identify underlying principles or facts, then draw conclusions and recommend paths forward which are cost effective and meet client / rehabilitation requirements..
Five to Ten (5-10) years of solid experience in the Aluminium smelter industry.
The above is normally acquired through:
- A recognized degree in engineering or scientific discipline from an accredited college or university, OR
- A professional license in an appropriate discipline from a recognized licensing board, OR
- Specialized courses in relevant general engineering or an appropriate engineering discipline, AND
- Progressive work experience, including supervision, preferably in project and staff design engineering but may include other relevant types of engineering including startup, field engineering or plant operation in aluminium smelters or engineering/construction firms.
