THE ROLE
This is a unique opportunity to join Origin Energy’s Advanced Analytics team. The Future Energy Analytics team plays a pivotal role in providing valuable insights into Future Energy solutions such as solar PV, electric vehicles, batteries, and carbon reduction. The team informs various stakeholders of emerging insights and opportunities, analyses developments across multiple business divisions and growth initiatives, informing executive decision making and long-term strategic direction across Origin. This function is critical to driving optimal commercial outcomes, including supporting the newly established Origin Zero business.
This role will revolutionise how Origin models, markets, and operates solar PV, electric vehicles, and other DER assets by building and delivering complex solutions that will accelerate the speed to market of diverse and innovative offerings to our customers.
Reporting to the Future Energy Analytics Lead, you’ll be responsible for and get the opportunity to:
- Be at the cutting edge, bringing Future Energy solutions to life: Support the modelling and software development activities that bring to market emerging and maturing solutions such as batteries, solar PV, electric vehicles, and carbon reduction
- Design, build, iterate and scale: Play a dual role by developing innovative physical and financial models for various Future Energy solutions and scaling them
- Implement a variety of technical solutions: Including production ready, large scale and ad-hoc data modelling, software development, API development and insight development. This ranges across a variety of techniques, including but not limited to complex asset modelling, timeseries forecasting, machine learning, computer vision, geospatial analysis, energy and financial optimisation, and combined solution modelling
- Work with an industry leading team: Collaborate with web developers, cloud platforms, and analytics practitioners to effectively deliver technical and software solutions. Influence multiple stakeholders and solve strategic business problems
- Add depth, make an impact, and deliver significant strategic value: Create, develop, and champion best practices and processes to support seamless, consistent, high-quality delivery.
The ideal candidate is an experienced Python developer with strong technical skills in modelling and software development. They can design, develop, iterate, scale, and maintain sophisticated and mathematically complex models written in Python with multiple data integration points, while collaborating with broader web and application development teams to deliver a cohesive software experience to technical and non-technical stakeholders. Your curiosity and desire to transform the energy industry and build real world solutions will be leveraged in this role.
You’re experienced in and have:
- Strong Python and SQL skills, developed through relevant tertiary study and/or 5+ years of experience in previous roles and practical application
- Experience building complex mathematical models in Python
- Experience delivering code and software that have a significant mathematical component (e.g., optimisation engines, decision support systems, machine learning models, physics engines, and simulation engines)
- Experience working with broader software engineering teams, particularly web development teams
- Experience working with cloud infrastructure and tools (AWS EC2, Aurora and Sagemaker)
- Machine learning and computer vision expertise (desirable)
- Exposure to FastAPI in a machine learning or statistical modelling context (desirable)
- Prior tech or deep tech startup experience (desirable)
- Experience within the energy industry (desirable)
- Strong academic or research qualifications in physics, mathematics, engineering or equivalent (desirable)
- Curiosity to learn about new and emerging energy solutions.
