About the Grant
Eligible preservice teachers will receive a grant to assist with placement-related travel expenses*(i.e., transport, accommodation, meals, incidentals) for placements undertaken in an eligible QLD state school in Semester 1 2024. The grant is based on the duration of the placement (to be completed consecutively):
- $2250 for 15 days
- $3000 for 20 days
- $3200 for 25-30 days
- $3400 for 40+ days
Eligibility
To be eligible, you must be enrolled at an and:
- be in your 3rd/4th year of an undergraduate or 1st/2nd year of a postgraduate initial teacher education program, and

The placement must be undertaken in a QLD state school that has a transfer rating of 2-3 and is located:

Eligible state schools are highlighted blue on the maps (below) including select schools in the North Coast. Select schools in the Metropolitan South are eligible if they are highlighted orange on the maps (below). Private and independent schools are not eligible for the grant.
If the school isn't highlighted in the maps (below) and the school is inland from the east coast, the (TR4-TR7) could be considered.
Candidates who are on permission-to-teach (PTT) may be eligible if undertaking an unpaid placement and meet the eligibility criteria (above). Contact the department's (S&G team) to confirm eligibility.
Application Process
Step 1 - Organise your placement * Select a state school for the placement.
- Ensure the state school meets the eligibility criteria (above).
- Organise the placement with the university.
After the placement is confirmed (Sonia Online or InPlace): * apply for the grant (below) by logging into Smart Jobs (create an account if needed)
- in the ‘upload files' section, upload your unofficial academic transcript, enrolment, blue card, placement confirmation, resume and placement reports (email the requested documents to the S&G team if needed), and
- respond to all the questions in the online questionnaire.
Step 3 - Grant offers
You'll be advised of the outcome within 3 weeks to either seek further information or to provide an offer. Regularly check your email bin/spam folders.
A condition for payment is to notify the S&G team of any changes to the approved placement particulars (i.e., a re-scheduled, cancelled or terminated placement) which may affect the grant amount to be paid/repaid.
Step 4 - Payment of the grant
Payment will be made by EFT which can take up to 3 weeks.
