Austin Health acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land upon which our various campuses are located, and pays its respects to Elders, past and present.

Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across three campuses in the Northeast of Melbourne and state-wide.

As part of our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan, our vision for reconciliation is one where all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have access to just, equitable and culturally safe healthcare.

About our Aboriginal Cadetship:
This is an exciting and flexible professional development opportunity for two 2nd or 3rd year nursing students to join our team as an Aboriginal Nursing Cadet and work across any of our three sites (Austin Hospital and Olivia Newton John Cancer and Wellness Centre, Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital, Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre).

The cadetship will provide you with the opportunity to gain some pre-graduation professional experience and start your nursing career in a supportive environment. It also allows you to earn an income, be connected with our Indigenous Staff Network and explore future career options within healthcare and Austin Health. We also support your attendance at cadetship network cultural development days and professional development opportunities (e.g. Congress of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nurses and Midwives Conference).

The cadetship requires completion of 320 hours of employment, which traditionally takes place across 40 eight-hour shifts. The timeframe for this role is negotiable and flexible based on your personal and university circumstances and commitments.

The cadetship is supported by the Department of Health and Human Services and aligns with our organisational commitment to Aboriginal employment.

About the role:
Austin Health considers that being an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Person is a genuine occupational requirement for this position, therefore applications will only be considered from candidates of these backgrounds as per the Special Measures Provision, Section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic).

This role functions in accordance with the Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing (RUSON) position within our clinical nursing services.

A regular day will see you:
Work under the supervision and delegation of a Registered Nurse
Assist the nursing team with the provision of patient care
Develop and demonstrate decision making capacity
Maintain a safe patient care and work environment

About you:
We are looking for two 2nd or 3rd year Bachelor of Nursing students to work in a role that complements their existing learning.

Ideally, you’ll have:
Commitment to working in a team environment
Ability to work collaboratively with others
Beginning level interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to identify and escalate problems to the supervising RN

Our benefits:
Working at Austin Health means enjoying a strong sense of purpose, engaging in meaningful work every day. You’ll also receive a variety of rewarding benefits, including:

Greater take-home pay through generous salary packaging
A suite of wellness initiatives designed to support you, including discounts on fitness memberships and health insurance, and a comprehensive wellbeing program
Mentoring and career development opportunities
Onsite childcare, easy access via public transport, car parking and end of journey facilities for cyclists
Indigenous Staff Network - join our staff network who meet monthly to connect and yarn
Cultural and ceremonial leave, and celebration of significant annual cultural events throughout the year
Opportunities to get involved in various working groups to support Austin Health’s vision for reconciliation, where all Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples have access to just, equitable and culturally safe healthcare
Opportunities to connect with previous Austin Health cadets and current cadets across other health services

Inclusion at Austin:
We celebrate, value, and include people of all genders, identities, bodies, and abilities. We welcome and support applications from anyone identifying as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, physically diverse, LGBTQIA+, and people of any age.

Work with us!

If you feel this role is right for you, we encourage your early application. All appointments are made subject to a satisfactory National Police Check and if required, a Working with Children Check.
