Where you'll be working:

Killara Rehabilitation is a 15 bed Rehabilitation ward which utilises a multi-disciplinary approach with the aim of assisting patients to regain their pre-morbid level of mobility, self-care and independence. We provide care to patients recovering from stroke, orthopaedic surgery, general deconditioning post-surgery or long illness and those with aging issues and concerns with managing at home. The patients have access to a gymnasium for group sessions and their own personalised exercise regime. Nursing and medical staff join with the allied health staff from physiotherapy, occupational therapy, psychology, social work, speech pathology and dieticians in order to ensure holistic care is provided to the patients.

What you'll be doing:

The Registered Nurse coordinates and delivers high quality nursing care to patients/clients of The Sutherland Hospital & Community Health Services consistent with SESLHD and The Sutherland Hospital & Community Health Services policies, procedures and standards. The FIM Nurse is a Registered Nurse that is responsible for the assessment of The Sutherland Hospital Rehabilitation patients utilising the FIM framework. The FIM Nurse uses FIM assessment skills and knowledge to determine baseline function of patients at the beginning of Rehabilitation and then to re-assess these patient on completion of Rehabilitation therapy to determine what gains have been made. The Sutherland Hospital FIM Nurse is also responsible for managing and assessing patients with care type changes during admission to Maintenance and/or GEM care types. The FIM Nurse is responsible for working independently in this data collection and assessment and must input the data for Rehabilitation, Maintenance and GEM care type patients onto the required systems utilised by The Sutherland Hospital in a timely and accurate manner. The FIM Nurse must act as a change champion and help promote type changing to be consistent with the level of activity and patient acuity. FIM Nurse must be credentialed in FIM assessment and is responsible for maintaining their status as a FIM assessor.

Our Hospital and Community:

The Sutherland Hospital is a 375-bed, major metropolitan hospital and an associated teaching hospital of the University of NSW, which is part of the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District and is located in Caringbah, a southern suburb of Sydney. Established in 1958, The Sutherland Hospital campus offers a comprehensive range of inpatient and community services to around 226,000 residents of the Sutherland Shire, colloquially known as ‘The Shire’

A $62.9 million redevelopment has delivered a new and expanded emergency department, 60 new acute inpatient beds, and storage space for theatres to improve efficiencies. Current refurbishment works to provide an expanded medical imaging service are in progress.
The hospital campus is close to some of Sydney’s great beaches, restaurants, bars and cafes at Cronulla and is close to the beautiful Royal National Park. Gymea is another lively suburb with many restaurants and cafes. At Miranda, just a short walk away from the hospital, there is a Westfield Shopping Centre and cinema complex.

The ideal candidate will have: * Current unrestricted registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia.

  • Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication, interpersonal skills and the ability to identify key messages, issues and concerns when communicating with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively engage with patients/clients to enhance service delivery and to guide others in providing service excellence.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team and apply professional and ethical boundaries when dealing with complex situations.
  • Basic computer skills and proven ability to use health information systems.
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of risk management, safety and quality principles and the role of the Registered Nurse in applying these principles.
  • Demonstrated recent post registration experience in an acute care and/or a Rehabilitation care setting.
  • Detailed knowledge of the principles of Type Changing and Sub and Non Acute Patients.
