DAHS is seeking a dedicated Registered Nurse in Derby, Western Australia on a Full Time Basis. The position is responsible to support the integration of early childhood, child and family health, and family support services in a number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities

 About us:

  • Derby Aboriginal Health Service (DAHS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service (ACCHS) providing holistic primary health care services to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in Derby and surrounding communities
  • DAHS provide a wide range of innovative public health programs in addition to direct comprehensive primary health care services
  • The position is responsible to support the integration of early childhood, child and family health, and family support services in a number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities so that children are healthy and best prepared for school
  • To work as part of the DAHS team including World Vision Australia in providing a quality and client focused environment, addressing health and developments issues and ensuring that services are delivered in a culturally safe way
  • DAHS is seeking a dedicated professional who is a Nurse registered with AHPRA
  • The position is responsible to support the integration of early childhood, child and family health, and family support services in a number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities so that children are healthy and best prepared for school
  • You’ll have appropriate skills and experience in the delivery of comprehensive primary health care within the organisation
About the role:
  • Full Time - 76 hours per fortnight
  • Improve health outcomes for children so they are ready to commence school
  • Work with children, families to assess children are achieving developments milestones so they are ready to start school
  • Participant in developing and implementing programs to so shat children are healthy and best prepared for school
  • Perform Medicare benefits schedule items for health checks (715), GP management plans (721,723) for children 0 – 5 years
  • Be accountable for the safe, efficient and effective use of resources, including assisting with forwards planning for DAHS
  • Work within your level of professional competency and seek advice and clinical guidance from senior clinicians as required
  • Be prepared to share your clinical knowledge and expertise with other staff members
  • Follow DAHS clinical policies and procedures
  • Participate in the development, presentation, evaluation and written reports of health programs and services
  • Participate in ongoing training by DAHS and other agencies as required
  • Promote DAHS other population health areas: Sexual Health, Maternal and Child Health, Women’s Health and the SEWB services to clients and initiate referrals
  • Provide support and assistance to visiting Specialists, Allied Health Staff and other health agencies
  • Work with external agencies to deliver best practice client care including: Community Health, Mental Health, Department of Child Protection and Hospital Services
  • Assist in client follow up and liaise with other agencies when necessary
  • Liaise with the Specialist Clerk to organise referrals to allied health clinics
  • Work within the parameters of DAHS OHS policies and procedures including Infection Control, Emergency Evacuation, Outreach and Remote Visits and reporting of Incidents, Accident and Near Misses (and Hazards)
  •  Follow the policies and procedures stored on the DAHS LogiQC and practice in accordance with guidelines standards, code of ethics/conduct and statutory and legislative requirements
  • Commit to the philosophy and practice of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation
  • Assist fellow staff members with information about community, culture and language that is relevant to client care, and for appropriate behaviours and respect of culture
  • Actively participate in quality audits, quality improvement and accreditation activities including exercising initiative in making improvements to work processes
  • Work within your level of competency and seek advice and guidance from senior staff as required
  • Be prepared to share your clinical and organisational knowledge and expertise with other staff members
  • Participate in professional appraisals activities and supervision as required
  • Undertake multi-functional duties, relevant to position; as directed by Senior Management
  • Report directly to your line manager in regards to all work issues including any matters which may have possible legal implications
  • Liaise with other government and non-government agencies to achieve equitable outcomes for clients
  • Work as a member of the DAHS team with staff from all areas: Medical Reception, Administration, SEWB, Clinic, Maternal and Child Health and Senior Management
  • When required, will perform clinical duties, as part of the clinic team, in all areas of the health service
  • Use problem-solving strategies to ensure an effective and efficient service
  • Actively participate in training, up skilling and educational activities, as directed, including but not limited to in-services, clinical competencies and induction
  • Individuals are responsible for identifying and initiating their own professional development
  • Actively participate, as directed, in internal and external meetings
  • Maintain statistics, administrative records and client documents as per DAHS policies and procedures
  • Produce reports for DAHS as required
  • Ensure maintenance of equipment, including IT equipment, vehicles and phones
  • Advise line manager regarding equipment/resources requirements
  • Perform office duties including, but not limited to, photocopying, faxing, laminating and processing paperwork
  • Where necessary, develop and support key staff in the use and application of information management systems to organise maternal health, including the monitoring and maintenance of data quality
  • Contribute to process improvement and adhere to all DAHS Policies and Procedures
  • Participate in Performance review process
  • Contribute to effective team performance
  • Follow all safety procedures and contribute to a safe work environment
  • Liaise and cooperate as required with other Project and Policy staff in DAHS

  • Personally demonstrate through consistent behaviour understanding of, respect for and compliance with culturally sensitive ways of working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, staff and communities
Experience & Qualifications:
  •  Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulatory Authority – (AHPRA) as a Nurse with at least 2 years post graduate experience
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, written and computing skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge, competence and attitudes required to provide Primary Health Care nursing within a patient centred and culturally appropriate approach to care
  • Knowledge and understanding of the issues faces by Aboriginal people in rural and remote areas and the impact they have on health and wellbeing
  • Are able to work for short periods under extreme weather conditions when on outreach and community visits
  • National Police Clearance
  • Working with Children’s Check
  • Current driver’s licenses
  • Previous experience in primary health care
  • Hold a current Immunisation Certificate or working towards certification
