Institute for Advance Engineering and Space Sciences

The Institute for Advanced Engineering and Space Sciences provides a dedicated facility for Space and Defence research with a focus on hypersonic propulsion systems, rockets, advanced materials and astrophysics, with world-class infrastructure and equipment.


This is a unique opportunity, performing essential engineering research for the design, execution and analysis of experiments using the hypersonic wind tunnel for the ARC Discovery project “Dispersion of spacecraft components during re-entry”. In this position you will be responsible for:


  • Optimisation of existing systems for free flight experimentation in the TUSQ facility, including model insertion and calibration of optical systems for model tracking;
  • Development of new strategies to improve the precision and knowledge-yield from the optical tracking measurements;
  • Introduction of additional on-board data acquisition systems and non-intrusive methods for measurement of surface and flow field properties;
  • Managing the hypersonic wind tunnel facility, ensuring it is in a premium operating condition for the planned experiments.

What you need to succeed in this role


Your initiative and excellent communications skills, combined with your ability to work collaboratively within the ARC Discovery project team, will be vital to your success. Additionally, you will have:

  • An extended Degree or higher qualification (e.g., Masters), or equivalent experience in the area of mechanical or aerospace engineering, ideally with a focus on hypersonics. Progression towards completion of a Doctoral qualification would be highly regarded
  • Demonstrable expertise in the application of engineering software to leading-edge research problems
  • Excellent hand-on abilities in the workshop and laboratory environment
