Your new role

The Centre for Marine Science and Technology (CMST) comprises a multi-skilled group of scientists and engineers committed to the development of technical ocean-related skills in Australia. The Centre has earned a reputation as a high-quality marine technology research and development facility responsive to industry and government needs.

To learn more about the Centre for Marine Science and Technology, please visit: http://cmst.curtin.edu.au/

Curtin University have an exciting opportunity for an early-career post-doctorate to join the Centre and continue to grow underwater acoustics research at CMST, with a focus on offshore industry and maritime-defence-related research.

The initial focus involves the application of physical acoustics to one or more of: numerical modelling of sound sources, ambient noise, sound propagation, passive acoustic monitoring of marine fauna, anthropogenic noise, marine soundscapes, and noise impacts on animals. While the position is primarily research focussed, its teaching component includes Higher-Degree by Research (HDR, i.e., PhD and MSc) and Honours student supervision.

Additional accountabilities include:
  • Manage research projects in underwater acoustics.
  • Develop applied research contracts with industry and government, in particular maritime defence.
  • Drive research outputs such as publications in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals.
  • Organise and lead ocean fieldwork.
  • Develop and maintain software for underwater acoustic research (e.g., for sound generation and propagation, signal detection and classification, soundscape quantification, sound source localisation and tracking, and animal abundance estimation).
  • Manage underwater instrumentation and equipment.
  • Manage underwater acoustic data (i.e., download, calibrate, archive, and back-up).
  • Help develop block/short courses in underwater acoustics (including development of teaching material).
  • (Co-) Supervise Honours, Masters, and Doctoral students.
  • Submit successful research grant applications.
  • Prepare scientific project reports (including financial acquittals).
Candidates will be required to have a level of fitness with the ability to lift heavy equipment.

We encourage non-Australian citizens/residents to apply; however, you will require work rights in Australia that match the tenure of this role, and you must be willing to relocate to Perth, Western Australia, for the duration of the position. Visa sponsorship and relocation support may be considered for the preferred candidate.
