About Melbourne Data Analytics Platform (MDAP)
The Melbourne Data Analytics Platform (MDAP) was established in June 2019 as a workforce of translators to support data-intensive research, and it sits in the Chancellery Research and Enterprise portfolio. Currently employing over 20 data specialists and data stewards, the platform collaborates on research projects from all areas of the University. This team is working to ensure our researchers, students and collaborators have the necessary tools and resources now and, in the future, to keep us at the leading edge of research in this exciting, fast-paced era of data science and computation.

About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about research and wants to work in a collaborative team with diverse backgrounds and expertise. The Research Data Specialist - Web Developer reports to the Melbourne Data Analytics Platform team leaders, working on a variety of projects, and supporting research via collaboration. Your main responsibility will be designing and developing a prototype stem cell registry, which will consist of a database and a web user interface. This registry will be developed in collaboration with Professor Christine Wells, Department of Anatomy and Physiology. The position is supported by Phenomics Australia, and forms part of the University of Melbourne stem cell platform capabilities.

The role offers a solid chance to use both hard and soft skills - data collection, analysis and presentation as well as building relationships and networks with the University research community.

Responsibilities include:
  • Development of a prototype stem cell registry schema and database, data entry and sharing protocols.
  • Liaison between Australian and international-based stem cell stakeholders for design and testing of the database structure association with the stem cell registry.
  • Delivery of support and development programs, including across graduate, post-graduate, team and non-standard research projects.
  • Help to strengthen communities of practice through active collaboration, networking and membership across all research areas.
  • Use your wide engagement networks to enhance leadership and visibility of data intensive research.
About You
You have a passion for research and commitment to problem-solving and flexibility. You will have outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to synthesise information and tailor messages to a variety of audiences. This role will work in an open and honest environment, so you will need to be comfortable with direct communication and self-reflection.

You will also have:
  • A PhD or equivalent experience in a data-intensive research field.
  • Database design and web development experience.
  • Expertise in web technologies such as Python, Flask (or other Python web frameworks such as Django, Pyramid), JavaScript, CSS.
  • Strong technical expertise in at least one of data collection, analysis, management, or visualisation.
  • Research experience in genomic data, bioinformatics pipeline or workflow development.
