The Opportunity

We have an opportunity for a Research Services Officer to be part of our SARDI and Major Programs Division within the Department of Primary Industries and Regions.

The primary purpose of the role is to support the delivery of fieldwork required to complete the scientific research outcomes for the Molluscan Fisheries Sub-Program, and support fieldwork activities across the Fisheries Science Program and other SARDI Aquatic and Livestock Programs. The Molluscan Fisheries sub program undertakes research projects that provide high quality scientific information and advice to facilitate the sustainable management of the Greenlip Abalone, Blacklip Abalone, Pipi and Vongole fisheries in southern Australian waters. The Fisheries Science Program undertakes research and development activities on the fisheries and habitats of the South Australian continental shelf and gulfs for the South Australian government on behalf of all stakeholders in those fisheries, including Western King Prawns, Blue Swimmer Crabs, Southern Rock Lobster, marine scale and pelagic fishes. The Molluscan Fisheries Sub-Program and Fisheries Program undertake stock assessments and carry out biological and ecological research to meet the information needs of managers charged with responsibility for managing sustainable exploitation and equitable allocation of these fisheries resources. In addition, externally funded contract research for industry and other external funding bodies is undertaken.

The role contributes to delivering the agency’s priorities including (1) Increasing productivity of our primary industries and agribusinesses (Stimulating Value Growth); (2) Securing production through biosecurity and efficient and sustainable use of resources (Sustaining the Resource); (3) Growing regions by supporting key regional development drivers and growing opportunities available to our regional communities; and (4) Building partnerships with industry, stakeholders, research organisations and regional communities.

The role contributes to delivering scientific advice and stock assessments for the sustainable management of SA’s fisheries resources – a key SARDI Aquatic Sciences divisional objective. SARDI is one of Australia’s leading fisheries research agencies.

Special Conditions

Qualifications

• Essential: ADAS Part 1 commercial dive qualification (SCUBA or equivalent)
• Essential: Coxswain/Master 5

OPS4 $74,315 - $77,901 per annum
