Compliance and Enforcement Branch
The Compliance and Enforcement Branch is responsible forcompliance and enforcement activities across the energy market. Thebranch works with the ACCC and other regulators in respect ofrelevant enforcement and compliance activities.
This includes developing risk-based compliance programs,industry education and engagement on key issues, managing retailerauthorisations and exemption applications, assessing retailerhardship policies, and undertaking general compliance assessmentsand audits.
We are responsible for conducting investigations into allegedbreaches of the electricity, gas and retail laws and rules and forimplementing the AER Board’s decisions in respect ofcompliance and enforcement action.
Role and Duties
Senior Compliance Officers research, interpret and assesspotential contraventions of energy laws and rules in accordancewith AER processes, and contribute to the development andimplementation of risk-based compliance initiatives. Theycontribute to compliance outcomes that support the achievement ofthe AER’s purpose to make all energy consumers better off,now and in the future.
Senior Compliance Officers report directly to an AssistantDirector in the Compliance and Enforcement Branch and operate witha high level of autonomy. Senior Compliance Officers in theCompliance and Enforcement Branch will perform some or all of thefollowing duties:
- Analyse, assess and advise on regulated business participation in energy markets in a timely way
- Undertake regular reviews of energy business compliance with energy laws and rules, conducting audits or compliance studies, and undertaking reviews of market events
- Contribute to the development and implementation of risk-based compliance initiatives
- Draft written material for a wide audience including correspondence, minutes, briefings, guidelines, advices and submissions on compliance issues, and Committee and Board papers
- Manage stakeholder relationships with staff, AER Board and senior managers, energy market participants, government (federal and state/territory), and consumer groups to progress AER functions and projects
- Keep accurate, thorough and functional records, including capturing documents in information management systems and updating systems and reports
- Work flexibly as part of teams, across multiple projects in a geographically dispersed work environment
- Assist in the supervision and development of staff, including mentoring, supervising and reviewing work.

Salary: $89,541 to $100,359 per annum (plus15.4% superannuation)
