About the opportunity

NSW Health Pathology are seeking a Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist to join the team at Coffs Harbour Base Hospital. This is an opportunity for an experienced Scientist to work closely with Pathologists and to lead a new team in a new expanded Anatomical Pathology laboratory.

The Coffs Coast offers unspoilt beaches and World Heritage rainforest and is nestled in a breathtaking pocket of paradise between Sydney and Brisbane. What you'll be doing

Responsible for the management of scientific, technical and support staff, all testing and associated activities and logistics for the assigned laboratory. The position oversees the quality, cost and operational integrity of the department, regulatory compliance and accreditation of laboratory services in the department, human resource, business and resource management.

Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification, with subjects relevant to pathology from a recognised tertiary institution.
Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers, patients and clinical and laboratory staff, along with report writing skills, statistical evaluation of scientific data and the ability to effectively communicate policies and procedures
Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of accreditation frameworks, relevant standards and quality systems
Demonstrated managerial skills with experience in laboratory operations, administration and budgeting
Advanced knowledge of Pathology Laboratory Information Systems including supervision of e-based Quality Management Systems
Extensive high level knowledge of working within the relevant section of the laboratory with knowledge of the operation and maintenance of analytical equipment in a pathology laboratory
Sound understanding of legislation, policies and requirements that impact the laboratory environment including work health and safety and privacy requirements

Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases

This is a Category A position. All Category A applicants must read and understand NSW Health Policy Directive PD2022_030 Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Diseases. All recruits must agree to comply with the requirements outlined in this policy. All recruits must provide evidence against specified diseases and comply with the requirements of this policy at their own cost prior to appointment.

All NSW Health workers are required to have two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, as defined by NSW Health. Employees working in a clinical area or are required to attend clinical areas are considered category A. Category A positions are required to provide evidence of having received three doses of COVID-19 vaccine in accordance with the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (TGA) and meet the requirements of the Occupational Assessment Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy Directive. You will be required to provide a record of your COVID-19 vaccination status if successful.

Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.
