Senior In-house Lawyer / Legal Counsel-Industrial Relations

About the role
We have a permanent full time opportunity for a Senior Legal Counsel, Industrial Relations based out of our corporate head office in North Sydney. This is a rare opportunity to move into a senior role and take on responsibility to ensure our people-based activities function within the legal framework of employment law.
This role functions across the whole of UGL to include a broad range of industries such as Water, Resources, Transport and Defence and provides technical and legal advice to the National IR Manager and Executive Leadership Team.
The primary objective of this role is to assist the IR Managers and our P&C community apply the technical aspects of a broad range of employment dos and don’ts, ensure compliancy with current legislative requirements including but not limited to the Fair Work Act and the Building and Productivity Code 2016, provide advice and approval for terminations, investigations and disciplinary actions and instruct, brief and manage external lawyers.
Day to day you will provide advice on changes in legislative policy procedures and how we can apply changes in the law to our business, advise the business of outcomes around court actions, Fair Work, dismissals etc and generally advise on directions the law is developing.
Essentially you will apply the technicalities of employment law to mitigate industrial relations risks associated with non-compliance, agreement making and dispute resolution and attend court to represent UGL’s best interests.
Some of the key responsibilities
  • Ensure all processes, documentation and site operations are compliant with the 2016 Building Code and provide training to management and site teams
  • Oversee the drafting of all EA’s and co-ordinate Compliance Certificates
  • Provide Privileged Legal advice to the business
  • Participate and guide IR strategic planning with IR Managers
About you
  • Relevant legal qualifications and current Practising Certificate
  • Substantial legal experience in Industrial Law, within the blue-collar workforce industries
  • Advocacy experience both in the Fair Work Commission and Federal Court
  • Experience to provide sound, practical and accurate advice and solutions across the full range of IR and ER activities to include strategy, enterprise bargaining and dispute management
