Primary objective
To provide the Northern Territory Government its Authorities and Instrumentalities with high quality legal services with respect to
civil litigation matters.
Context statement
The Litigation Division provides legal advice and representation in relation to a wide range of civil litigation, criminal, quasi-criminal
and administrative law matters to the Northern Territory Government, its agencies and statutory bodies. This position is in the Civil
Claims team, which is tasked with providing advice and representation in matters which have a general civil law claim focus. The
type of work includes advice and representation in respect liability arising under intentional and unintentional torts, such as general
negligence claims, medical negligence and claims against police. The role also extends to more general duties including providing
advice in respect to liability which may arise under statute and general statutory interpretation.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide legal advice and legal representation on major, complex or sensitive matters.
2. Supervise allocated legal staff to ensure that matters they are working on are conducted in a timely, efficient and professional
way.
3. Maintain a high level of knowledge in the relevant areas of the law and of relevant practices and procedures.
4. Provide a high level of service to clients including preparation of court documentation, correspondence and other materials.
5. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Prepare and present legal concepts, positions or factual analyses clearly
and correctly.
6. Represent the Solicitor for the Northern Territory, liaise with clients and deal with people and issues in a professional manner
7. Organise work so as to manage priorities effectively and meet deadlines.
8. Accept responsibility for the content and presentation of all documents produced.
9. Provide case management for complex and sensitive outsourced matters.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Admission as an Australian legal practitioner and eligibility to obtain a local practising certificate.
2. Significant experience in the practice of law in the relevant fields.
3. Well-developed understanding of the organisation and management of a personal legal practice involving major and complex
cases.
4. Ability to negotiate effectively and to communicate in a professional manner.
5. Ability to manage files in order to meet client needs and deadlines.
6. Ability to cope with pressure and to work as part of a team.
Desirable
1. A well-developed knowledge of the Territory, its laws, the workings of government and the development of legislation in a
practical way and experience in liaison with Ministerial and senior public service personnel.
2. Experience in a position involved with the supervision and development of junior professional staff.
3. Experience in advocacy, mediation and negotiation.
