- Direct engagement with the project delivery team as well as other key legal representatives in the Legal, Company Secretariat and Insurance functions
- Reporting to Chief Legal Counsel New Zealand; no direct reports
About Your Role:
Reporting to the Chief Legal Counsel New Zealand, the Senior Legal Counsel will be responsible for the provision and management of all legal services to the project team delivering a key strategic construction project for the business, including:
- Delivering growth and sustainability through supporting diligent and efficient on-site processes and procedures.
- Modelling safety leadership behaviours including demonstrating due diligence in managing workplace health and safety risks.
- Advising and assisting on contract drafting, procurement, negotiation, establishment and management.
- Inputting into and participating in senior level negotiations where necessary.
- Providing expert legal advice, information, briefs and other documents to ensure the Company operates within the law and is able to meet contractual, statutory and regulatory requirements.
- Reviewing and providing advice and oversight to internal clients regarding compliance, governance and statutory obligations.
- Being the first and primary point of legal response for all on-site issues and activities.
- Building and maintaining close working relationships with the site delivery team, external legal advisers and consultants & Principal's internal advisors for the life of the project.
Skills & Experience:
We will consider candidates with the following:
Located in OR willing to relocate to Auckland, New Zealand
Extensive experience as a legal practitioner in private practice OR large in-house ASX listed organisation. Previous experience on directly advising large scale projects desirable.
Experience in advising in one or more of the following legal practice areas:
Construction and infrastructure (front or back-end).
Commercial contracts.
Tertiary legal qualifications
Current practising certificate or (if lapsed) extensive legal practice background.
Demonstrated experience engaging with key stakeholders and Company executives in relation to complex and material legal issues; this role engages directly with the project team on the ground
Excellent skills in:
Leadership, Commercial judgement & negotiation, Problem and solution identification
Communication skills; including the ability to distil complex issues/ideas into succinct and understandable propositions
Working under pressure as part of a wider delivery team.
Inter-personal relationship development in high pressure non-legal environments.
Demonstrated experience in engaging with regulators and advising on investigations, inquiries, and other regulatory matters (desired).
A strong desire to develop a detailed understanding of all aspects of a complex construction project.
