What you'll be doing

The primary purpose of the NSW Statewide Voluntary Assisted Dying Pharmacy Service (VAD-PS) is to provide high-quality and comprehensive pharmaceutical care, integrated within the multidisciplinary VAD team, by partnering with patients and clinicians to ensure the accessible, compassionate, safe and effective use of VAD medicines for eligible patients across NSW.
This position supports the VAD Pharmacy Lead in the development and implementation of VAD-PS, hosted by NSLHD. Once the statewide VAD-PS is established and becomes operational from 28 November 2023, the VAD Senior Pharmacist will work as a member of the VAD-PS team as well as assisting the VAD Pharmacy Lead to manage the service.

Key Responsibilities

Service Commissioning Phase Assist the VAD Pharmacy Lead to design the VAD-PS and ensure statewide service readiness, including:
Establishing the service.
Determining workforce and resource requirements.
Recruiting required staff.
Developing and implementing a training and credentialing program.
Other implementation activities

Provide input as required into the development of key clinical and non-clinical elements, such as

Assist in development of clinical guidelines, pharmacy protocols and related documents.
Contribute to development of key implementation deliverables, including the education and training package and care pathways.
Participate in stakeholder engagement such as fora, presentations and committees.
Develop and implement procedures, resources and consumer information.
Service Operations Phase

Provide compassionate, safe, high quality pharmaceutical care as a member of the VAD-PS team. This includes:

Provision of information, education and support to individuals accessing VAD and their families/carers, including home visits as needed.
Provision of information, education and support to physicians engaged in caring for individuals accessing VAD, including practice visits as needed.
Supply of approved VAD substances in accordance with relevant legislation and protocols.
Assist the VAD Pharmacy Lead in the management of the VAD-PS. This includes:

Acting as VAD Pharmacy Lead when needed. Providing expert clinical advice, professional support and mentorship to team members.
Assisting in recruitment, training and performance development of VAD-PS staff. Assisting in the rostering of staff for the VAD-PS, including data entry into the payroll system.
Participating in the development, collection, analysis, quality improvement activities and reporting of performance indicators.
People of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background encouraged to apply.

Candidates will need to meet the following criteria

Current registration as a pharmacist with AHPRA with no conditions or restrictions on practice.
Extensive experience of working as a pharmacist in a senior capacity in the NSW public hospital system, preferably with clinical experience in end of life care.
Demonstrated experience of managing staff in a team environment, including training and performance development.
Demonstrated capacity to set and manage competing priorities and to deliver high quality outcomes within agreed timeframes.
