The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) is seeking a Senior Policy and Programs Officer – Aboriginal Health to provide a critical role within Justice Health.
This is a prioritised role for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples, who will be given priority consideration as per the special measures provision of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.
About the business unit
The Aboriginal Health Unit is responsible for the design, development, implementation and motoring of initiatives to strengthen Aboriginal health care within both adult and youth custodial settings. this includes initiatives to:
Enhance cultural safety of health care services
ensure that health care services meet the needs of Aboriginal Prisoners and young people, including prioritising culture, cultural strengthening, addressing trauma and supporting healing,
increase aboriginal engagement with healthcare services
The Aboriginal health unit will achieve this through working in partnership with key stakeholders including Aboriginal adults and youth in custody, community, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs), contracted health service providers, custodial staff and other services provided in custody.
About the role
As the Senior Aboriginal Policy and Programs Officer, you will develop and support initiatives to ensure the health care of Aboriginal people in prisons and youth justice centres is culturally safe and culturally responsive, sensitive and recognises the importance of self-determination to Aboriginal people.
Some of your duties will include:
Undertake work to support addressing the health needs of Aboriginal people in adult and youth custodial settings.
Strengthen and sustain engagement and partnership approaches with Aboriginal Controlled Community Health Organisations to progress principles of self-determination, co-design and collaborative effort in health policy design and implementation.
Develop and review policy and provide authoritative advice, recommendations and innovative options to senior management and stakeholders in relation to the health and rehabilitation needs of Aboriginal people in adult and youth custodial settings.
Regular state-wide travel will be required for this role.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with the Victorian Aboriginal community.
Strong knowledge of, and demonstrated experience, working with Aboriginal communities and advisory groups, including sophisticated and culturally aware stakeholder engagement.
Well-developed writing skills, including experience in preparing quality and timely briefs, reports and correspondence using clear and concise language, and content appropriate to its purpose and audience.
A relevant qualification in health care, public policy or a justice related field is highly desirable, as is previous experience within government and knowledge of the Victorian Aboriginal community.
