As a department our purpose is to help the community to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from the impact of fire and emergency events.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is the primary provider of fire, rescue and emergency management programs and services throughout Queensland. The department encompasses the Fire and Rescue Service, disaster management services, the Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service, and also supports other volunteer groups providing emergency response to Queenslanders.

Purpose of role

The Hazard and Risk team leads the development and delivery of evidence based disaster risk information for Queensland through the integration of contemporary and internationally aligned risk methodologies. The team contributes to a range of activities associated with disaster risk management, disaster risk reduction and sustainable development, working to reduce the current and future impacts of disasters on the community.

Reporting to the Manager, you will be responsible for providing advice and support for disaster risk management and risk reduction activities in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of Queensland's Disaster Management Arrangements (QDMA). You will work as part of a team contributing to the design, integration, implementation and evaluation of projects, programs, systems, tools and policies to help reduce the impacts of disaster/potential disasters on the community and state.

Key requirements

Highly desirable requirements

• Knowledge and/or experience or qualifications in project management methodologies.
• Knowledge and/or qualifications in a relevant discipline e.g. disaster risk science, climate change, geospatial science, social science, emergency management, critical infrastructure or other related field.
• Experience working in an area of applied research and/or a disaster management and operational planning or policy context.

Special requirements

• It is expected that the incumbent may participate in an out-of-hours on-call roster during emergency operations. This may require work outside of normal hours (e.g. night shift), including weekends, working extended hours and may include deployment to other parts of the State.

Your key accountabilities

Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting key frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:

• Contribute to the development, implementation, integration and evaluation of evidence-based disaster risk management and risk reduction programs, policies, systems and tools.
• Provide high-level advice and guidance to identify and assess risk within the QDMA and analyse data to help strengthen good governance in disaster risk reduction strategies.
• Research and assist in the development of risk based planning, policy and procedures to help improve the identification and assessment of capability and capacity to manage disaster/potential disasters.
• Undertake projects and contribute to deliverables, monitoring and evaluating outcomes against performance targets to effective develop risk based planning and policy across all levels of QDMA.
• Prepare and review timely and well researched briefing papers, submissions and reports in relation disaster risk management initiatives, in accordance with organisational requirements.
• Contribute to the management of risk communication and education strategies to support and effectively liaise between regional staff and volunteers, disaster management groups and the community.
• Develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure customer requirements are met and business objectives are achieved.
• Undertake and support operational duties during emergencies and disasters and actively participate within a dynamic work environment, fostering teamwork and observing human resource activities, including actively participating in performance and development programs.
