About the role
We are looking for a Specialist Communities & Communications to lead communications and support Communities & Social Performance (CSP) activities for Rio Tinto’s Boyne Smelter (BSL) Operations. In this role you will work closely with operational, CSP and Corporate Affairs leaders and play an integral part in communicating with Boyne Smelter’s (BSL) diverse workforce and neighbouring community. This role will suit someone with broad communication and community engagement experience who’s ready to take their career to the next level.
The Specialist will work closely with leaders on site and be responsible for all aspects of internal communication, managing a broad range of internal stakeholders on and off site. The successful applicant will be comfortable in a leadership role, able to communicate for influence, and have experience in dynamic, fast-paced frontline environments.

Reporting to the Manager Communities & Comms Gladstone on a 12-month contract working within the Gladstone Communities & Communications team, you will:
  • Lead the development and implementation of major communications strategies and plans for the BSL site and actively engage with frontline employees and leaders
  • Coach leaders on effective and impactful communication and engagement principles, and the role they play in driving strong engagement with team members
  • Manage development of meaningful, memorable and motivating communications content, ensuring information is relevant, timely and impactful
  • Champion implementation Rio Tinto’s Community and Social Performance Standard by providing strategic advice and guidance to operational and central teams, and effectively managing social risks
  • Represent Rio Tinto at key internal and external events to support proactive engagement with stakeholders
What you’ll bring
  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • At least five-10 years’ experience in a communications role preferably in the mining industry
  • A bachelor’s degree in communications or related discipline/field such as journalism, public relations or marketing
  • Ability to effectively engage with deliver for a range of internal stakeholders with varying interests and perspectives – experience in community development/engagement beneficial
  • Team leadership experience
  • Video production experience – preferably in a mining or ‘high-vis’ environment
  • Strong writing skills and editing skills
  • Basic level of design experience (beneficial)
  • Creativity, initiative and curiosity

Where you’ll be working
Boyne Smelters Limited is Australia’s second largest aluminium smelter with a 1,000-person strong workforce. Located approximately 20km south east of Gladstone at Boyne Island on the Central Queensland coast, BSL produces around 500,000 tonnes of aluminium per annum.
Activities at BSL include manufacturing carbon anodes in the carbon plant, aluminium production (smelting) in reduction lines, and casting of molten material into aluminium products ready to ship. The smelter is connected via a conveyor belt to the Queensland Alumina Limited refinery for the supply of alumina.
