Job Description
The Age is looking for a news-breaker who can unpick the business and politics of racing. You will report to the Sport Editor and be part of a team of high-performing and talented journalists.
Day to day you will:
  • Provide quality sport coverage, particularly on racing, that meets defined subscriber audience targets and deadlines
  • Consistently generate richly reported news, interviews, features and premium content, particularly associated with major events including the Melbourne spring racing carnival.
  • Pitch unique story ideas to the sports editor
  • Cultivate and leverage contacts at Melbourne's key racing institutions.
  • Generate agenda-setting news with a focus on major racing events
  • Ensure all copy meets legal requirements
  • Demonstrate excellent news judgment and knowledge of key content areas
  • Ensure the highest standard of accuracy, ethics and editorial quality.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders in the newsroom
  • Produce stories that convey the importance of racing to Melbourne, including insights on the personalities and issues in the sport.
  • Attend major race meetings and other events in your round
Qualifications
The role requires a multi-skilled journalist with a strong understanding of horse racing and the ability to write compelling stories.
What we would like to see on your resume:
  • Experience in a digital-first newsroom and a proven ability to report deeply and break news
  • Strong knowledge of and expertise in horse racing and the industry.
  • Broad knowledge and interest in a range of sports, and how they relate to other topics
  • Excellent digital storytelling and presentation skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated strong writing skills with a commitment to accuracy and balance
