This is a 6-month fixed term, part-time 0.6FTE position commencing Term 3, 2024
Melville Senior High School (SHS) Intensive English Centre is seeking a dynamic Teacher - English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EALD) teacher to join the team.
Melville SHS offers students access to our highly regarded programs including an academic Gifted and Talented Selective Entrance Program.
Melville SHS has Approved Specialist Programs in Aviation Studies, Graphic Design Media, and Netball in addition to a school-based merit-selected Academic Extension Course and Music in Focus program. We are also an Intensive English Centre and offer an International Fee-Paying Student program.
The successful applicant should possess an excellent knowledge of the Western Australian Curriculum and the WA EALD Progress Map. The successful applicant should possess competency in teaching students of varying ability and English language proficiency across Years 7 to 10 in a highly engaging manner.
Ideally, the successful applicant will be a dedicated and highly motivated educator with the ability to develop quality teaching and learning programs across all learning areas to develop the students’ language and literacy needs. The successful applicant should have a passion for working with overseas students, including humanitarian visa holders as well as International Fee-Paying students.
The successful applicant should also have a strong knowledge of teaching strategies to support language acquisition through subject content. Further, experience in teaching phonics and phonemic awareness using the THRASS (Teaching Handwriting, Reading And Spelling Skills) program is highly desirable. A sound knowledge of, and explicit teaching in grammar, reading comprehension, oral language, and writing is also desirable.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.

ELIGIBILITY
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement; and
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
