Townsville Bulletin is looking for a confident and experienced journalist to join its dynamic newsroom to write compelling stories about crime.

The role includes regular weekend shifts and requires a writer with demonstrated ability who isn’t afraid to ask tough questions and tackle the region’s most important issues.

We’re looking for an enthusiastic and resilient individual who has the ability to build rapport with a wide range of people and gain exclusive insights to break the big stories and find fresh angles.

The best candidate will be skilled in news gathering and developing key contacts, have a solid grasp of social media and the ability to pitch and deliver engaging, high-quality content that drives conversation.

What’s the role?

Source and create compelling stories around crime
Deliver relevant content that both engages existing subscribers and attracts new readers
Work under deadline pressure in a fast-paced environment without compromising on quality or accuracy
Focus on online engagement and drive subscription growth
Demonstrate initiative to search for stories that are not already breaking and identify unique angles that drive conversation and move the issue forward

Who are you?

News Corp is looking for a savvy, plugged-in journalist/digital producer wanting to make a name for themselves and who knows their way around social media, loves breaking news and can cover court.

The successful candidate will be:
Active in online communities and can see a hot topic in these communities from a mile away
Keen to be out of the office as much as they are in it
Wanted for exciting new positions covering the booming tourism and lifestyle capital of Australia that is Townsville.
Enjoy attending events, including socially out of hours, working some weekend shifts and nights
A confident and experienced journalist with demonstrated ability
Thrives on the challenge of meeting business outcomes and reader expectations and actively looks to exceed them
Ability to cut through political speak and get to the core of complex issues
Strong news judgment and interview skills
Understands and has experience in digital storytelling as well as print
Willing to embrace change and demonstrate agility in a fast-paced sector
Self-starter who can maintain high levels of personal organisation and time management
Understands social media, SEO, digital data and is active on social media platforms
Hard working, detail-oriented and able to stay calm under pressure
Able to build and maintain a solid network of valuable contacts
