What you'll be doing
Wagga Wagga Base Hospital (WWBH) is a 325-bed referral hospital serving the Riverina region of New South Wales. The vascular surgery service at WWBH serves the entire population within the Murrumbidgee Local Health District, and additionally receives referrals from surrounding regions. Round-the-clock on-call cover is provided by three consultant surgeons. A wide range of open surgical and endovascular procedures are carried out, with the service conducting 8–10 scheduled theatre and procedural sessions per week.
WWBH seeks to appoint an unaccredited trainee to the vascular service for the 2023 clinical year (12-month post). It is anticipated that the successful applicant will receive a wide range of clinical experience in vascular surgery through the post, with substantial opportunities for training in relevant operative and procedural skills. The post is ideally suited to candidates wishing to prepare themselves for entry to formal vascular surgery training through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Participation in the middle-grade after-hours on-call roster is expected.
The primary purpose of the role is to provide effective clinical management of surgical patients, under appropriate supervision, whilst developing expertise in medical practice, in a complex clinical environment. The medical officer is the key person who works closely with all members of a multi-disciplinary team and deals with matters of an urgent or sensitive nature, whilst exercising discretion, sensitivity and maintaining confidentiality.
Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the medical officer's skills, knowledge and experience. The medical officer will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO). All patients managed within the hospitals of the health district are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care
MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia.
Demonstrated effective teamwork, time management and problem solving skills as part of a multidisciplinary clinical care team.
Evidence of continued professional development and commitment to self-education and teaching undergraduate and post-graduates.
Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgement and expertise.
