Job description

RSPCA Queensland is a non-government, community-based charity dedicated to improving the lives of domestic, farmed, and native animals in Queensland. Our mission statement is simple but powerful: Together We Change Lives.

About the role

You will play a vital role in the animal health and welfare services and community-based education aspects of the work RSPCA QLD delivers. People and Pets | Better Together is our teams core value. The primary responsibly of this role is provide the community with much needed outreach Veterinarian support to deliver quality, needs-based services to Queensland venerable pet owners.

Support the Cairns Shelter in carrying out examinations and diagnoses including prescribing appropriate treatment as well as performing routine surgical procedures.
Support the team to develop and deliver initiatives in targeted areas to create holistic programs that address One Welfare issues in the community.
Provide veterinary services to the public through community programs, this includes:
Conducting activities to a standard of the Veterinary Surgeons Board of QLD and RSPCA QLD policy.
Carrying out routine examinations and diagnoses including prescribing appropriate treatment.
Provide owners with preventative health care information including the provision of preventative health care information, diagnosis and treatment options.
Performing routine surgical procedures such as desex, dental, lump removals etc.
Perform pathological testing in accordance with infection control protocols.
Perform euthanasia if required.
Provide Veterinary services to the Cairns Regional Council as per MOU arrangements.
Participate when required in RSPCA Qld emergency response activities.
Attend cruelty investigations and provide expert advice on animal welfare issues including conducting in field animal examinations and giving evidence in court proceedings.
Collaborate and assist stakeholders with research projects associated with Outreach activities.
Mentor staff and volunteers, ensuring they are trained, fully enabled and utilised.
Establish and maintain relationships with relevant stakeholders including veterinarians, government agencies, industry and community groups.

Who are we looking for?

Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree (or Australian recognised equivalent).
Working knowledge of Animal Welfare Issues (locally, state-wide and nationally).
High levels of compassion and interest in animals and their care givers.
Capacity to work well under pressure with limited resources.
High levels of both written and verbal communication skills. Including the willingness to appear in media programme broadcasts (tv, radio and the internet) and as a professional witness in court proceedings related to cruelty cases.
High ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions, and the ability to read, analyse, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures or government regulations.
Basic computer skills.
Ability to perform physical duties including manual handling, and an ability to handle a minimum weight of 10 kilos.

This is a full-time position, working hours are Monday to Friday. The candidate will also be required to work some evening shifts, weekends and travel intrastate when necessary. Remuneration is commensurate with qualifications, experience and skills.

This position also requires occasional interaction with children on educational basis; therefore, the successful candidate will be subject to a Working with Children Check, criminal background check, and reference checks.
