About the Role

The Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Coordinator reports to the WHS Manager, assigned to an area/package, and is responsible to support the Package Manager in delivering safety and to proactively assure the Contractors adhere to their contract obligations and monitor and enforce the health and safety requirements.

The WHS Coordinator is required to be fully familiar with the contract terms, health and safety requirements, and respective Contractor WHS Management Plans. The WHS Coordinator works pro-actively with the Delivery Partner, client and Contractor team members to relentlessly drive our goal of zero accidents across the Project.

The WHS Coordinator participates and supports the various WHS activities including progress meetings, quarterly zero incident forums, including attendance at pre-starts, toolbox talks, and completing leading indicator engagement activities.

The WHS Coordinator is a key individual supporting the Delivery Partner’s (DPs) role in providing Project Management services and deliverables. In performing this role, the WHS Coordinator will be familiar with the contract terms, scope, and requirements and will work as part of the broader DP package management team to fulfil the DP obligations.

The WHS Coordinator is a leader within the team that demonstrates the highest standards of WHS through their personal leadership and engagement.


Roles/Responsibilities

The WHS Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Monitoring and reporting on the WHS management program for assigned area(s).
  • Providing technical support to WHS issues and assessments and other applicable reviews.
  • Provides specialized input to engineering, construction, contractors and assigned contractors, thus ensuring that WHS requirements are properly integrated into project planning, design criteria, construction plans and specifications.
  • Providing assistance to project and construction management in implementing and complying with project WHS requirements and in addressing WHS issues as they arise during project execution.
  • Coordinating and providing technical assistance to other project-assigned functional leads (e.g., engineering, subcontracts, procurement, project controls) with regards to compliance with project-specific WHS requirements.
  • Participating in meetings with WSA Co., DP project team members, and Contractors to advise them of WHS requirements that may affect project design, schedule, and cost.
  • Providing technical support and assistance directly to construction management and subcontractors in planning and executing field activities in accordance with the project WHS requirements.
  • Conducting field health and safety reviews of project construction activities to monitor compliance with requirements including contractual commitments, contractor WHS management plans, permits, and other applicable standards.


Qualifications and Experience

  • Knowledge of Construction, and NSW Workplace Health and Safety laws and regulations and proficiency in applying them to the project.
  • Working knowledge of WHS work practices and experience in conducting incident investigations, compliance audits and project health surveys.
  • Skilled in oral and written communication and knowledge of computer applications
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Post Graduate Diploma in WHS/Management or related science/engineering area.
  • Minimum of 9 years of WHS professional experience in heavy construction.
  • Knowledge of WHS management, monitoring programs, principles, and methodologies.
  • Previous Bechtel experience is highly regarded.
  • Previous Senior Advisor experience is essential.
  • Proficient in written and oral communication in English.
  • Experience of incident investigation techniques i.e. ICAM or TapRoot Certification.
