Job description

About Rainbow Families

Rainbow Families aims to build a community which fosters resiliency by connecting, supporting and empowering LGBTQ+ families. We provide support and resources to members of the LGBTQ+ community so that they and their families can live their best and most colourful lives. We host events that connect LGBTQ+ families, particularly those that are feeling isolated because of social pressures, financial difficulty or where they live. We advocate on behalf of our community and are a strong and consistent voice for LGBTQ+ families to address discrimination, raise awareness and promote acceptance.

Our Youth Council is a facilitated group for young people aged 9-16 who have LGBTQ+ parents. The group has been running in different forms since 2018 and has a core group of active members. In term 4 this year the group wants to meet fortnightly in Sydney’s Inner West with a program of activities for the term as well as expand to include more young people.

The Role

As Youth Council Coordinator, you’ll work with a small dynamic team to develop a sustainable and impactful Youth Council for Rainbow Families. You will facilitate, support and evaluate a schedule of activities, programs, services, and events designed to address the identified needs, interests, aspirations, and challenges of young people in the Rainbow Families community.

Before term 4 starts, with the support of our Executive Officer, and Community Welfare And Education Committee Lead you will develop a plan for the Youth Council for the term, and coordinate the activities in the plan. Following this you will facilitate the Youth Council each fortnight. You will be required to monitor the progress of the Youth Council against the plan for the term, evaluate and document each session and identify and explore new opportunities to support young people in the Rainbow Families community.

Skills Required

Ideally you have an understanding of the for-purpose sector and/or working or volunteering within the sector supporting young people. You also have the following:

  • Ability to work independently within a small team
  • Demonstrated understanding of referral and advocacy of and for young people
  • Current First Aid certificate relevant to the role or wiliness to obtain
  • Working with Children Check (NSW) and Criminal Reference Check

This is a casual or contract role – approximately 6 - 8 hours per fortnight during school term plus planning and coordination time prior to the start of the term.

  • Fixed Term Contract – September to December 2022 with the aim to renew for term 1 next year
  • Flexible hours
  • $50 per hour casual
