Job description

Brisbane Boys College is an established GPS day and boarding school. The school was founded in 1902 by Mr. Arthur Rudd, who had a vision of shaping boys to be worthy leaders and good citizens – a vision that remains today. The College occupies 13-hectare site four kilometres from the centre of Brisbane and educates boys from Prep to Year 12.

Volleyball is an exciting team sport played by the College in the GPS competition during Terms 4 (pre-season) and Term 1 (in season). From 2019 – 2024 the College Volleyball Program has grown immensely with approximately 230 boys involved. 

BBC enters the GPS competition with 4 teams per year group with our 1st VI flagship team playing in the official GPS 1st VI competition. BBC were GPS Premiers in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2001 and more recently in 2019. 

The College also enters teams in the Australian Schools Volleyball Cup (ASVC) annually, during relative seasons. BBC Volleyball high-performing players are encouraged to trial for representative pathways through Northern Districts, Metropolitan West and Queensland Schools Pathways. Several boys also compete in the Beach Schools Cup where the College has had recent successes. 

The Volleyball Program and Director of Volleyball is supported by a generous group of volunteer parents which form the Volleyball Support Group (VSG). The VSG operates under the Parents and Friends Association of the College. 

The coaching structure follows the BBC Leading Coaching Structure Philosophy. Training sessions are conducted in line with the Co-curriculum Timetable - twice per week - with games on Saturdays during Term 1 against other GPS schools. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Be aligned to the BBC Volleyball culture.
  • Follow the policies and procedures of BBC Volleyball. 
  • Devise, implement and review a training program for the 1st VI squad.  
  • Attend all sessions, games and after match functions for the 1st VI team.   
  • Be responsible for the duty of care for the 1st VI squad and senior players. 
  • Develop players for future 1st VI representation.   
  • Recruit and engage boys in the BBC Volleyball program including 2-3 recommendations for scholarship program each year.
  • Organise and attend the January development camp and pre-season trials in consultation with the Director of Volleyball. 
  • Lead and build a culture of success and professionalism within the 1st VI program and recruit an Assistant Coach and support staff. 
  • In collaboration with the BBC strength and conditioning team and coaching staff, implement the S&C program for the 1st VI, monitor and manage the workload of players to prevent and manage injury.
  • Ensure notification to the Director if any injuries, accidents or incidents occur. 
  • Provide timely and appropriate feedback on performance and reinforcement of effort and progress. 
  • Active participation in training is expected with emphasis on skill, technique and improvement.   
  • Work collaboratively with lead coaches and all coaches within the program. This includes providing support and advice where necessary.  
  • Ensure that players have the correct equipment and attire and behave in the appropriate manner in accordance with the Code of Behaviour as set by the QLD GPS Inc and expectations of BBC students in accordance with the BBC behavioural standards. 
  • Attend accreditation updated courses wherever possible and sports seminars at the discretion of the Director.
  • Attend the official presentation of 1st VI team at the College assembly.   
  • Attend the Volleyball post season function. 
  • Lead team selection for the 1st VI squad following the BBC Volleyball selection policy. 
  • Perform a 1st VI team review to be presented to the Director of Volleyball at the completion of the season. 
  • Manage and coach the 1st VI squad at the AVSC in December each year.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Proven experience as a coach (Level 2  qualification  or above).
  • Strong knowledge of current coaching techniques and strategies.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office.

  • Skill improvement and competency levels. 
  • Build a culture of success and professionalism within the 1st VI program. 
  • Quality of match reports and reviews.

Further KPIs to be determined in consultation with the Director of Volleyball.

  • Comply with College policies, procedures, and training requirements, including those related to occupational health and safety, risk management, child protection, and confidentiality.
  • Positively support the College’s traditions and Christian ethos.
  • It is a condition of employment that the incumbent must apply for and obtain a Blue Card for Working with Children or current registration with the Queensland College of Teachers prior to and while you are employed in the position.
