Are you considering a career in media? Maybe you want to be a journalist, reporting the news on TV and TikTok! Or you might prefer working behind the camera, or as a video editor, to help tell really compelling stories. A career in media can also include working as radio producer, or presenter, and interviewing interesting and unique people from across our communities. Every day is guaranteed to be different when you work at a place like the ABC!
In 2024, the ABC is offering a strictly limited number of one-week High School Work Experience placements in Melbourne and Brisbane to year 10, 11 or 12 students with a focus on increasing Pacific Islander participation within the ABC and to give these students a hands-on experience of working within the ABC Pacific teams.

About ABC Upstart Pacific: High School Work Experience Program
2024 Program Dates: Monday 2 September to Friday 6 September
This may be outside of your school’s preferred Work Experience placement dates, so please ensure your school is happy to accommodate these dates before applying.
If you’re a Melbourne High School student in Greater Melbourne, you’ll have the chance to work with the ABC’s Asia Pacific Newsroom team, and see how radio programs like Pacific Beat, and TV shows like “The Pacific” go to air, as well as learn about our social media storytelling.
If you’re in Greater Brisbane, you’ll be based with the ABC Radio Australia team and see how radio programs like Nesia Daily go to air, you’ll spend a day with the Brisbane newsroom, and learn from ABC News’ digital pros about social media and online storytelling, and you’ll hangout with the team which produces the “Australian Story” TV program.

Application process
Once you hit the “Apply now” button below, you’ll be directed to an online application form. You will have to create a profile which means you can save the application form and come back to finish and submit it later.
It will ask for your contact and school details, and ask some questions about you, your interests and inspirations. We would love to see you too! You’ll have the opportunity to upload a short video, or audio-only if you prefer – but it’s up to you if you choose to answer via a video, audio, or as a written Cover Letter.
Applications close April 14th 2024. We’ll notify you by email if your application has been successful or not and may also reach out to meet you over teams or zoom.
