Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer

NSW Department of Education has an exciting opportunity for a skilled and experienced individual to join the Student Wellbeing Support Directorate team as an Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer, supporting the schools in the Sunraysia area of the NSW.

About the role

The role works as part of a team to develop partnerships and understanding between the Aboriginal community and the Department of Education at all levels, thereby helping to improve the outcomes for Aboriginal school students.

In this role will be responsible for:

  • Liaising and collaborating between the Department, Schools, and Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG).
  • Facilitating and foster Aboriginal community involvement in educational initiatives.
  • Supporting families to re-engage with education.
  • Provide specialist cultural perspectives to ensure cultural sensitivity.
  • Coordinating and networking within the community and a broader area to support the families and community.

About you 

We are looking for a highly empathetic and excellent communicator who can build relationships within the student’s community and their families. It would be great if you also possess:

  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively, negotiate sensitively, and build respectful relationships within Aboriginal communities.
  • Case management skills and previous experience in a similar role, ability to manage case load.
  • Have appropriate oral and written communication skills and a willingness to participate collaboratively and positively in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to implementing the Department’s Aboriginal Education (nsw.gov.au) and upholding the Department’s Partnership Agreement with the NSW AECG and to ensure quality outcomes for Aboriginal people.

Essential requirements of the role

  • This position is targeted to the employment of an Aboriginal person and is authorised by the Department's EEO Management Plan in accordance with Part 9A of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977. When applying for an Aboriginal identified position, applicants must provide confirmation of Aboriginality and a certified statutory declaration upon interview as defined in the Confirmation of Aboriginality Guidelines
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the value of public education
  • Hold a valid clearance to work with Children (Working with Children Check) for paid employment

This role is subject to flexible working arrangements, however there is an expectation to attend Wentworth Public School on a regular basis, as required.
