Job description

The Role:

Communicare is the Lead Agency of the Fremantle Rockingham Family Support Network, working in partnership Langford Aboriginal Association (LAA), to assist families and individuals with multiple and complex issues, to obtain support services they need to keep their children safe. 

You will be required to support Family Support Network (FSN) staff to engage with Aboriginal families who are at risk of involvement with child protection. You will provide cultural advice and support to case workers where required. The position will require you to ensure all service delivery is culturally appropriate and that Aboriginal ways of working is at the forefront of service delivery with Aboriginal children and families. You may be required to facilitate meetings with FSN case workers and Department of Communities (CPFS) staff where Family Led Decision making will be supported and encouraged. The position will require you to be confident in engaging with CFPS when required. The Aboriginal Cultural Navigator provides one-on-one support and guidance to Family Support Network staff based at both Rockingham and Success service sites, to ensure a culturally safe service is provided to families. The role will support case workers who carry a case load of families from both streams of FSN service; Intensive Case Management (ICM) and Assessment and Coordination (A&C), working in-home with families, supporting them to meet their agreed goals and prevent the need for Child Protection involvement. 

The Aboriginal Cultural Navigator will be located in Success. This position is on a Fixed Term Part Time work basis and required to work 3 days per week for 45 hours a fortnight or more as required subject to the approval of the LAA executive team and after-hours work may apply to some elements of this position.

Selection Criteria

  • LAA recognises Aboriginality as a genuine qualification for this position under 50D of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984. To apply you must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) descent, identify as ATSI and be recognised as such by the ATSI community.
  • Some case management and coordination skills and experience in completing assessments, case planning, and goal setting with families.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing place-based support services to individuals and families.
  • Ability to engage with Aboriginal individuals and families and work in partnership with them to achieve their goals using a variety of intervention strategies from a range of theoretical models.
  • Ability to establish strong working relationships with a variety of stakeholders, including the local Aboriginal community.
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of databases and systems to record, monitor and report on service activity
  • Police Clearance (no older than 6 months).
  • Current WWC Check Card.
