About Specialised Assistance School for Youth (SASY)

SASY's vision is to create a caring environment, where disengaged young people, with complex needs, are reconnected through holistic educational experiences that improve wellbeing and reignite their interest in learning.  

Established in 2016, SASY caters for students in Years 8-12 whose needs are better met by learning structures that may not be available in all mainstream schools. As a non-government school, SASY follows the national curriculum and SACE. 

We are a growing independent secondary school with a key focus on trauma informed practices, inclusion, restorative practice and wellbeing as fundamental principles in working with vulnerable and disengaged youth.

About the role 

With a primary focus on Aboriginal young people enrolled at SASY, the Aboriginal Engagement Youth Worker works in collaboration across SASY to provide for the holistic care and growth of the student group in alignment with the SASY learning framework.  The Aboriginal Engagement Youth Worker will provide case management of Aboriginal students across the school.   

The Aboriginal Engagement Youth Worker engages with students to support their social and emotional wellbeing, encouraging their continued connection with school through the provision of case management services, program delivery, proactive outreach and access to SASY programs.     

The Aboriginal Engagement Youth Worker partners with all staff to ensure that culturally safe and engaging programs and interventions are identified and utilised to provide positive experiences and learning outcomes for SASY’s Aboriginal students. 

The role will also develop and maintain strong positive stakeholder relationships with Aboriginal services, engaging students with these services when required.  

Please note that this is an identified position for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. All applicants must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.

Skills and experience 

To suit the role at SASY you will: 

  • Demonstrate experience engaging young people from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander backgrounds in participation programs.
  • Understand the impact of trauma on brain development and learning.
  • Demonstrate compassion, patience and innovation to inspire students to achieve important learning and personal milestones.
  • Be an effective case manager.
  • Demonstrate experience or knowledge of working within a flexible school environment  
  • Be able to build strong relationships with students, staff, parents, external services and members of the broader school community.
  • Have experience facilitating programs with vulnerable young people.
  • Be flexible and creative when responding to young people.
  • Have experience working collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Enjoy working in a dynamic, supportive, and fun environment.

In addition, you will need: 

Current Working with Children check 

Current First Aid certificate (can be completed if successful)   

Minimum of Certificate IV in Youth Work (or equivalent training, or relevant higher education) 

Responding to Abuse and Neglect (RAN-EC) (can be completed if successful)
