Ungooroo Aboriginal Corporation is looking for an experienced Aboriginal Mental Health Worker to join our suicide prevention outreach team. The outreach team is supported by a multidisciplinary team of health and social care workers.
This part-time role provides non-clinical and culturally focussed community-based support to people in crisis.
Although this a non-identified role, we strongly encourage Aboriginal people to apply.
About the role- Support Aboriginal people who are in suicidal crisis or experiencing suicidal thoughts/ideation.
- Make early contact with clients.
- Engage and connect to provide support, plan safety, and recognise distress.
- Work with a person-centred approach.
- Work with families and friends to support realisation of safety plans.
- Work with other agencies and link with support services to ensure the person's needs are met.
- Engagement and case management with other services.
- Establish relationships with other service providers.
- Participate in local community development.
- Follow WH&S policies and procedures.
- Be able to work in a team and model self-care to peers and colleagues.
- Maintain a professional approach.
- Demonstrate a commitment to community.
- Be resilient, flexible, quick thinking and compassionate.
- Understand the contribution a lived experience can bring to people in suicidal crisis.
- Experience providing Mental Health supports to Aboriginal people or experience working within Aboriginal communities.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the local Aboriginal community.
- Be able to actively engage and involve the Aboriginal community in activities.
- Have an understanding of the range of cultural, historical, familial and societal issues that affect the Mental Health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
- Valid driver’s licence
