About Us
Boorndawan Willam Aboriginal Healing Service (BWAHS) are the lead specialists in Aboriginal specific family violence services across the Eastern Metropolitan Region. The organisation has developed an excellent record of providing high quality family violence and trauma informed intensive case management, integrated family service responses and evidence based therapeutic programs to individuals and groups for a whole family approach.
BWAHS has partnered with The Orange Door (TOD) to provide culturally informed support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community members affected by family violence. The Aboriginal Practitioner role is located at the TOD office in the Inner East Metropolitan Region (Box Hill) and will provide intake, assessment and planning to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander clients.
The Aboriginal Practitioner will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver high quality, culturally safe and effective responses to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people seeking support and safety through the Orange Door. The agency provides a whole of family approach with a focus on victim/survivor safety and well-being, with supports also offered to users of violence to engage with services to address these behaviours and other support needs.
The Aboriginal Practitioner will report to the Orange Door Team Leader on a day-to-day basis with formal line management and supervision provided by BWAHS. They will also receive support and guidance from the Orange Door Aboriginal Practice Leader.
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and values and the ability to effectively communicate with Aboriginal people including women and children, men and families.
  • Demonstrated practical experience working in the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Community, especially in relation to case management.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in Social Work, Community Service, Welfare or the willingness to work towards a qualification.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to address a range of complex and diverse needs, including understanding of the importance of culture and Community connection.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the key contributing factors to family violence and the consequent vulnerability to children and family members.
  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and a knowledge of the privacy requirements relevant to the role.
  • Able to cooperate and work well with others to pursue team goals, collaborate and share information, show consideration, concern and respect for others feeling and ideas, and be able to accommodate differing approaches to case management.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, assess and prioritise risks and needs of community members in a whole of family approach.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills.
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
It is a condition of employment that BWAHS be provided with the following:
  • Current Victorian Driver’s License
  • Current Working with Children’s Check
  • Undertake National Police Check
  • Copy of Vaccination Certificate
