Accessible Film Studies Program 

Beep Beep Bus Stop is looking for a passionate emerging filmmaker to tutor and deliver our Accessible Film Studies programs in Hobart. We've been loving Tassie for 2 years now with our first program launched in Launceston and are looking forward to welcoming in some new emerging filmmakers to our brand new Hobart location.  

We employ casual tutors to deliver our program to classes of up to 15 students (Aged 17 and over) living with mild-moderate intellectual disabilities. The 40-week program runs from February to December and includes weekly classes exploring film theory, practical exercises, excursions and the production of a short film project. Classes are supported by two Disability Support Workers. 

Hobart will run on a Saturday at TasTAFE. We will be hosting three taster workshops in the coming months. 

What are we looking for in our tutors?

We’re looking for individual filmmakers who are passionate about the film industry and making a difference in the lives of others through film. We’re seeking dynamic creatives excited to share their skills and knowledge and lead their class through the development and production of a short film project.

You’ll need to meet the following essential criteria:  

  • Completion of an undergraduate course in filmmaking or media.
  • Completion of at least 1-2 short films in a director, producer, cinematographer, production designer.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Current Working with Children number.
  • Current Police Check.

 
Desirable Criteria:

  • Teaching experience is not essential for this role, however experience in teaching or workshop facilitation is highly regarded.
  • A basic understanding of the needs of people living with intellectual disabilities.

What can you expect from the role?

Bus Stop Films is committed to growing and developing emerging filmmakers. We offer a supportive work environment that is designed to allow you to use your creativity and build a future industry where inclusion is the norm. We provide all tutors with access to our Accessible Film Studies Curriculum, tutor handbook and classroom resources.

Our one year program has 4 terms with 10 classes per term. Each class is 3 hours. 

Reporting directly to the Head of Innovation, Teaching and Learning you’ll be expected to: 

  • Plan and implement weekly x 3-hour filmmaking lessons based on the Bus Stop Films – Accessible Film Studies Curriculum.
  • Identify resources and requirements for classes.
  • Identify opportunities for class excursions with the Support and Engagement Manager and Program and Student Experience Coordinator
  • Engage and encourage students to participate in sessions.
  • Engage support staff in sessions and direct according to the needs of the group.
  • Set up room and equipment for classes, as required.
  • Manage guest tutors, as required.
  • Work with the Chief Operating Officer and resident Producer to plan the production of the class short film project.
  • Develop and complete an inclusive filmmaking project with your program and within the approved budget.
  • Ad hoc administrative tasks as they arise.
  • Follow the Covid19 and work health and safety directives of Bus Stop Films and our host organisations. 

Hours of Engagement:

Casual tutors are engaged for a minimum 5 hours per week to prepare and deliver classes which are 3 hours of face to face engagement on a Saturday. Additional hours may be engaged around the film project production. Please note that Bus Stop Films is a not for profit organisation and some pro bono hours may be required.

Role Requirement – First Aid Certificate: 

You are required to have a current First Aid Certificate and Working with Children check. BSF can meet the costs for a First Aid Certificate if you do not have one.
