The Role
The 100 Squadron (100SQN) Australian Public Service level 6 (APS 6) Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (LAME) position is a unique position within the Air Force’s heritage aviation squadron, 100SQN, and is responsible for the maintenance of the Warbird, Historic and Replica aircraft fleet based at RAAF Base Point Cook in Victoria.The aircraft are registered on the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) register as Part 132 aircraft, each issued with a Special Certificate of Airworthiness. The LAME will support home base operations during standard hours of Monday to Friday 0730-1600, with the expectation of support to weekend flying at Point Cook and deployed locations for air shows. Additional working hours may be recompensed through time off in lieu or overtime payments in addition to the base salary. Due to the small workforce, the LAME will be expected to assist in tasks additional to the core role of maintenance.These include:
  • Receipt and storage of aeronautical product;
  • Researching and sourcing of spare parts and technical drawings;
  • Flight line duties including refuelling;
  • Tooling management; and
  • Hangar cleanliness.

Number 100 SQN as the Air Force’s heritage aviation squadron re-formed on 01 January 2021 and is charged with the mission to operate and preserve a world renowned national treasure of historic aircraft to honour and respect those who serve and have served.100SQN delivers an operational effect that provides significant social value of a living connection to our past, present and future generations, while engaging the Australian community with Air Force’s rare, rich and proud aviation history.The continued operation of the important artefacts of Air Force’s history and heritage is a significant and critical part of telling the story of our aviation journey and, combined with targeted education, social media and other media channels, will enhance Air Force’s recruiting, retention and reputation management campaigns.The maintenance and engineering team at Point Cook consists of a blend of military and civilian Aircraft Maintenance Engineers, licensed and unlicensed. We operate to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority standards for maintenance, reporting to supervisors through a military chain of command to the Commanding Officer 100SQN. We are supported by logistics, administration and operations teams to provide aircraft to the cadre of pilots to achieve the 100SQN mission.Our Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer who has been exercising B1.2 or B2 privileges recently ensuring maintenance of currency of the license(s).They will be:
  • Passionate about heritage Aircraft Maintenance and restoration;
  • Knowledgeable on aspects of the CASA legislation regarding CAR 30 organisations and part 132 aircraft;
  • Knowledgeable on foreign National Airworthiness Authorities to understand impacts on 100SQN aircraft;
  • Willing to learn and understand the requirements of;
  • Multiple aircraft types (metal, timber and fabric construction);
  • Multiple engine configurations (radial, V12 and 4 cylinder inverted);
  • Wood and metal propellers;
  • Avionics components ranging from basic clockwork dial and pressure gauges to modern electronic radios and equipment;
  • Individual and unique Continuing Airworthiness Systems of Maintenance; across complex regulatory frameworks spanning Civil and Military; and
  • Co-ordination and liaison across complex support networks consisting of Defence and civilian warbird operators domestically and internationally. The candidate will subject to a security vetting to hold a baseline security clearance for access to the Defence Protected Network.
