The Role
Within the Strategic Welfare function an APS6 Work Health and Safety Specialist is accountable under broad direction to perform and achieve complex work health safety specialist work within an integrated workforce. They are accountable to ensure they have knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Navy’s mission and policy requirements.

An APS 6 Work Health and Safety Specialist will have considerable level of stakeholder engagement and will liaise with stakeholders in relation to work health and safety issues. They will be required to identify, anticipate and respond to stakeholder’s needs and expectations to achieve work unit and Navy outcomes. They will be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development.

The Directorate of Navy Safety and Environment works across a range of specialisations including work health and safety, Occupational Hygiene, environment protection, and compliance and risk management systems. We are an integrated workforce which includes military and civilian personnel with highly specialised skills and deep maritime experience.

The Navy Safety and Environment (NavySafE) team is part of the Navy Engineering Division and works across a range of specialisations including work health and safety, Occupational Hygiene, and environment. NavySafE is accountable for developing and sustaining Navy's Safety and Environment Management Systems and assuring Navy senior leadership that these systems are effectively implemented and maintained.

Our Ideal Candidate

  • Demonstrate and apply specialist knowledge of work health and safety legislation, policies and procedures relevant to Navy.
  • Use experience to provide specialist advice to work health and safety advisers, Commanders and Managers and other stakeholders.
  • Liaise and act as a point of contact as necessary with other authorities and interest groups on work health and safety specialist matters. Attendance at specialist work health and safety issues meetings (such as Potable Water Working Groups).
  • Work collaboratively with work health and safety specialists on work health and safety programs.
  • Evaluate activities and processes for compliance with work health and safety legislation, policies and procedures relevant to Navy.
  • Resolve problems using specialist expertise, taking the initiative to identify alternative courses of action and implications for work health and safety activities.
  • Identify, evaluate, and control occupational health hazards in accordance with specified programs.
